Memorial Day is a chance for us to pause as a community and recognize the extraordinary individuals whose bravery and commitment shaped the freedoms and rights we treasure today.

Honoring them is about choosing, every day, to stand up for the same values they believed were worth the ultimate sacrifice: fairness, justice, and dignity for all.

Eight small caskets, side by side. A church filled with the heaviest silence imaginable. Shreveport gathered to say goodbye to eight innocent children—Jayla, Shayla, Kayla, Layla, Markaydon, Sariahh, Khedarrion, and Braylon—whose lives were stolen in the April 19 tragedy.

Instead of planning birthdays, eight families are now facing empty bedrooms and a future of unbearable silence. This wasn't just a funeral; it was the heartbreak of an entire nation witnessing futures vanish in an instant.

Happy Birthday, Frederick Douglass!

Born enslaved in Maryland, the exact birthdate of renowned orator, author, and abolitionist Fredrick Douglass (ca. 1818-1895) is unknown, however he chose to celebrate on Feb. 14. Douglass published Black perspectives and anti-slavery messages in "The North Star", his abolitionist newspaper named after the skyward beacon that guided the enslaved to freedom. Enslaved people imagined different worlds and different futures, and the discourse of anti-slavery articulated the conscious desires of Black people yearning for freedom from slavery and deliverance from the persistent presence of racism.
