For the third year in a row, the Sling N Steel BBQ Event has been an incredible success in support of the women and families we serve at St. Benedict’s Shelter!

A huge congratulations to all of this year’s winners, especially our Grand Prize Winner, M & M! 🎉

We were honored to see so many staff members from both St. Benedict’s Shelter and Daniel Pitino Shelter come out to support such an amazing event and enjoy a great day of community, fellowship, and friendly competition.

A special thank you goes to Nathan Rhodes and the entire Sling N Steel team for making this event possible year after year. Their hard work, dedication, and generosity continue to make a lasting impact on the lives of the women and families we serve.

Thanks to the support of everyone involved, $10,000 was raised once again this year! That support helps us continue providing shelter, stability, and hope to those working toward a brighter future.

We couldn’t be more grateful for our community partners, sponsors, participants, volunteers, and supporters who make events like this possible. Thank you for investing in our mission and helping change lives.

We are so honored to have been part of Marilee’s journey too! It takes a village and a continuum of care! Thank you Crossroads and Daniel Pitino Shelter! Marilee we are so proud of you! ✨

💥💥 Marilee's Big Move 💥💥

Marilee came to the Daniel Pitino Shelter in the winter months after experiencing homelessness for over a year. During that time, she faced many difficult challenges and was seeking stability and a fresh start. Although adjusting to shelter life was not easy at first, Marilee remained focused on moving forward and rebuilding her life.

While at the shelter, Marilee worked diligently with Case Management, not just at the shelter but also with River Valley Behavioral Health. She partook in life skills classes which afforded her the opportunity to learn budgeting and money management skills. This helped her a lot when she applied for and obtained employment here at the shelter with our White Flag events which take place during the winter months in low temps. She was able to save money and prepare for upcoming housing opportunities. She also mentioned that she learned to trust others more and build meaningful relationships with both residents and staff. Those connections helped encourage her to remain focused during a difficult season in her life.

One of the biggest moments in Marilee’s journey was receiving the news that she was getting her own apartment and today is the day!! For Marilee, having a place of her own means peace, stability, and a chance to begin a new chapter. She is especially excited to have a space where her grandkids can come visit and spend time together. She looks forward to adopting a dog from the animal shelter once she gets settled in. She hopes to return to work at White Flag next season as well and we will be happy to welcome her back.

Please take a moment to congratulate Marilee on her new home and exciting new chapter in her life!!

🎶 Thank You, Guitarists for Good! 🎶

Today, St. Benedict’s Women & Families Day Shelter was blessed to receive a guitar donation from the incredible nonprofit organization, Guitarists for Good, based out of Raleigh, North Carolina.

Just a few weeks ago, we applied for their program, and today we received this meaningful gift that will help bring encouragement, comfort, and creativity to the women and families we serve.

Their mission is simple but powerful:

“Guitarists for Good is a volunteer, 501(c)(3) charitable organization that shares its love of music by giving the gift of guitars, with a focus on those places serving the temporarily homeless in our communities. We find that the healing power of music offers peace of mind, the ability to cope with struggles, and comfort during a shelter stay.”

Music has a unique way of bringing peace, hope, and healing during difficult seasons of life, and we are grateful to now offer that opportunity within our day shelter.

Thank you, Guitarists for Good, for your generosity and for investing in the lives of those we serve every day. 🎸❤️

Sometimes service at the shelter looks like fixing a homeless lady’s bike. May seem small but that can make all the difference when that is your lifeline and only means of transportation. Our fix it man Mike is always behind the scenes 👏👏
