If you voted in the statewide primary election in Lee County in May…Alabama requires you to vote in the same party’s runoff (no crossover voting) for the June 16, 2026 runoff election as well.

📌 As discussed last night specific to TIMING… It is NOT clear as to whether there is actually time and opportunity to change the election in 2026. In a recent hearing, an Alabama election official said it would be “challenging” to accurately apply some requested changes in time.

📌 Where are we now?
Recognizing that is seems to change every day
“The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor Thursday of the Secretary of State’s request to stay a district court’s injunction.”

📌 How did we get it here?
LET’S TRY TO LEARN & PUT THIS ALL TOGETHER (Whew. It is A LOT)
☑️The District Court (Northern District of Alabama) found Alabama’s 2023 map discriminatory and issued an injunction blocking it. Specifically, the injunction blocked Alabama from using its 2023 congressional map and ordered the state to keep using a court-drawn “remedial” map with two majority-Black districts.

☑️Secretary of State, Wes Allen, appealed. This means he went to the 11th Circuit and asked for a STAY (to pause the injunction or the district’s court order)

☑️On yesterday, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the Secretary of State’s request to stay (or pause) a district court’s injunction. This means the Grants STAYS (or that the injunction is paused).

☑️ In a nutshell, the higher court agreed to temporarily block or freeze the district court’s injunction. This means that Alabama would be allowed to go back to using the 2023 map (at least temporarily).

☑️Possible next step - Appeal to U.S. Supreme Court, the highest-level court who can choose whether to hear the case or not.

☑️WHY IS THIS CRAZY?
The Supreme Court has already Ruled in 2023 that Alabama’s map likely violated the Voting Rights Act; however, they continue to be asked to intervene at different stages.

☑️Do we know what will happen?
NOPE. It is anyone’s guess at this point.
