On Tuesday, IAPMO CEO Dave Viola, CAO Gaby Davis, and the IAPMO Board of Directors accepted a commemorative crystal from ANSI - American National Standards Institute in recognition of IAPMO’s 100-year anniversary.

For a century, IAPMO has been committed to protecting public health and safety through codes, standards, product testing and certification, training, and industry collaboration. This recognition from ANSI is a meaningful reminder of the partnerships that have helped shape our work and our impact over the past 100 years.

Thank you to ANSI for this special honor as we continue celebrating IAPMO’s centennial year and looking ahead to the next 100 years of service to our industry and communities around the world.

On this day in 1926, 39 plumbing inspectors formed what would become our organization: IAPMO. These are our origins.

They recognized a flaw in the trades: people were dying or becoming ill from unsafe plumbing. Their response was to unite, standardize the trade, and protect public health through safe plumbing.

Here is how our first few decades unfolded:

1931: Work officially began on the very first Standard Plumbing Code.

1936: The Standard Plumbing Code was approved; our Research Committee (the precursor to the modern IAPMO R&T) was established by a vote!

1945: The Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC®) was born. To ensure rapid adoption, it wasn't up for sale; rather, it was mailed to cities upon request.

1950: The Research Committee began inspecting factories that manufactured plumbing products; this added a layer of oversight to products and code compliance before they reached the public.

So, IAPMO's history was, in part, the history of safer plumbing advancements in America.

Where did we go after the 1950s? Our next chapter in the timeline is coming soon!

The backflow prevention legend, Sean Cleary, is officially taking the global stage at the upcoming World Plumbing Conference. As our VP of Backflow Prevention Institute (BPI) Operations, he will examine how regulation, infrastructure, and innovation shape backflow risk in the session: “Backflow Prevention in Practice: Regional Perspectives on Risk and Reliability.”

Backflow Prevention is a frontline defense for public health, yet many regions trail behind in compliance & infrastructure. Alongside Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering VP Paul Daley, Peter McLennan, and WRAS Managing Director Julie Spinks, Sean will outline the risks and the case for stronger standards, improved compliance, and the consistent adoption of proven solutions.

As March comes to a close, we want to reflect on the nationwide commitment to water infrastructure demonstrated throughout Month.

From coast to coast, state and local leaders officially recognized the urgent need for sustainable water systems, drought resilience, and public health protections. We extend our sincere gratitude to Governor Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico, and Governor Tony Evers of Wisconsin. We also thank Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi, County of Maui, County of Kaua'i, Hawaiʻi, and the Honolulu City Council for their dedicated support, regional resolutions, and certificate presentations.

These proclamations underscore the essential role of the plumbing industry and the skilled professionals who maintain our daily access to safe, clean drinking water.

While March4Water Month is concluding, our work to secure safe water for future generations continues year-round. Learn more about our initiatives and how we support communities nationwide: www.uniformcodes.org/march4water
