Wild Clay Workshop: Harvest & Process Your Own Clay

July 14 @ 4-6pm

Join Madison High School 3D Art teacher Julia Bargo for the first session of this two-part Wild Clay Workshop. During this hands-on experience, participants will venture outdoors to collect natural clay and learn the complete process of transforming it from raw earth into workable ceramic material.

Students will learn how to identify, harvest, process, strain, and prepare wild clay while gaining insight into one of humanity’s oldest creative traditions. After processing, the clay will be left to settle, dry, and naturally harden over the following week.

Participants will return the following Saturday from 10AM-11AM to create with their own processed clay. Finished pieces will then be kiln-fired and available for pickup at a later date.

Join us for a Three-Week Needle Felting Course: How to Make a Horse and learn the art of needle felting as you create your own horse from start to finish. We'll take it step by step, shaping and building as your piece slowly comes to life in your hands.

- 2:00–5:00 PM

This beginner-friendly course covers the basics of needle felting, and you'll be able to take your project home between classes to continue working on it. All supplies are included—just bring your creativity and enjoy the process.

Does it feel more real?

I’ve been hearing that question lately as people walk through the greenhouse and see the gardens taking shape.

But what’s interesting is, it never didn’t feel real in the first place.

There’s this tendency to describe moments like this as “dream-like” when things feel beautiful or meaningful. But this has never felt distant or imagined. It’s felt grounded from the very beginning. Built in real time, with real effort, real uncertainty, real problem solving, and real joy threaded through all of it.

And even more than the space itself, it’s the people. The way everyone shows up as themselves. No performance, no polish for the sake of it. Just real conversation, real laughter, real kindness, real talent, real courage, and real presence. That’s what makes it feel so alive.

It doesn’t need to feel like a dream to be extraordinary. It already is, because it’s real.

Do you want to know what I love so much about The Grounds? I get to witness people find a hidden talent that they never knew was hiding within them. Almost everyone that comes to The Grounds for our Art and Makers classes, are new. Some are experienced, and all blend and cheer each other on. I get to watch people improve so quickly and I love more than anything, seeing how proud they are of themselves. Isn’t it so amazing how at any point in life, you can expand by simply trying?

The season of celebrations is here!

Good food, good people, live music, and moments spent together. We’re looking forward to all the gatherings, dinners, and events ahead this season.

Lately I’ve been sitting with how heavy it can feel to build something that is meant for good, especially as a small business or community space. When you are already pouring in everything you have, your savings, your time, your energy, your heart, there is not much left in the tank for anything extra.

And yet the extra keeps coming.

Misinformation that spreads faster than truth.
Killjoy energy that turns simple joy into something suspicious.
Fees, revisions, and delays that stack up when the guidance was unclear from the start.
Questions and reports that come not from conversation, but from assumption.

We’ve had it all.
Someone said we had a café. We do not.
Someone said we cut down six trees in a protected area. We did not.
We held a small class collecting tiny buckets of clay to learn from wild earth, and even that was misunderstood and reported as something it wasn’t.
Once, someone saw a small beaver dam from a bridge and chose to report it instead of simply reaching out.
And even something as simple as an email “So, are you planning to tear down the house? - Your Neighbor.” That was all. The beginning and sign off with zero guts, was something special.
Too many to count.

It can feel like you are constantly stopping forward motion just to untangle stories that were never true in the first place.…. (Continued in comments)
