BREAKING: Americans sent in 1 million public comments asking the USDA to leave the Roadless Rule in place.

Thank you to all those who submitted public comments and made your voices heard!

“The Roadless Rule has protected Michigan’s forests for 26 years. The rule was enacted with overwhelming support in 2001 and that support continues today. These are truly special places where wildlife species live, where our drinking water is filtered and where we connect with nature. They should remain protected,” said Calvin Floyd, Environment Michigan’s Conservation Advocate.

16,000 acres of mature and old growth Michigan forests -- and the recreation, wildlife, and ecological benefits they support -- could soon lose critical protections.

This week, the USDA finalized its plans to rescind the Roadless Rule, putting 45 million acres of forestland across the country under threat. Here in Michigan, this includes six Roadless Areas in all three of our national forests, on both peninsulas. From the emerald shores of Government Island to the towering aspens of the Norwich Plains, these forests provide some of the best paddling, hiking, hunting and camping opportunities in the state, while providing critical wildlife habitat and fostering headwater streams that flow into the Great Lakes.
