16,000 acres of mature and old growth Michigan forests -- and the recreation, wildlife, and ecological benefits they support -- could soon lose critical protections.

This week, the USDA finalized its plans to rescind the Roadless Rule, putting 45 million acres of forestland across the country under threat. Here in Michigan, this includes six Roadless Areas in all three of our national forests, on both peninsulas. From the emerald shores of Government Island to the towering aspens of the Norwich Plains, these forests provide some of the best paddling, hiking, hunting and camping opportunities in the state, while providing critical wildlife habitat and fostering headwater streams that flow into the Great Lakes.

St. Clair Shores has tons of lakefront parks, beach access and boat launches along Lake St. Clair. But when heavy rain hits, the area’s sewer system can’t always keep up. The sewage overwhelms the retention basins and the overflow drains straight into the lake. One storm in March 2026 alone sent 14.6 million gallons of overflow into Lake St. Clair.

But, the city found a fix — the Jefferson Relief Sewer project is installing a second, parallel sewer line to give the system the capacity it needs, redirecting flow to treatment instead of the lake. Once complete, it’s projected to cut overflows by 60%.

This is what investment in water infrastructure can look like. St. Clair Shores is one of the ten cities we highlighted in our new report that are taking steps to reduce pollution in the Great Lakes.
