We’ve got big news! We have an event coming up, and it’s one you don’t want to miss.

When? — Thursday, Nov. 19, 6:30-9:30 p.m.
Where? — Cannons Bar, 15421 Mack Ave., Detroit.

But the key here is the “what.” We’re getting together to offer a major post-election status update on the Michigan Multimedia Jobs Act.

The latest version of the MMJA was introduced on the floor of the Michigan House in May. When we get together, we will share how things have progressed since then, along with an overview of how we anticipate election results will impact the legislative landscape.

Earlier this week, SAG-AFTRA’s Michigan Local President Eric Wydra shared a letter in support of the bipartisan Motion Picture, Television and Entertainment Revitalization Act currently pending in Congress. He highlights the bill's potential to create over 100,000 new domestic jobs per year.

SAG-AFTRA has been a longtime MiFIA supporter, and Eric highlights the federal legislation's potential to energize backers of the Michigan Multimedia Jobs Act (MMJA) in Lansing. The MMJA would be stackable with the national incentive, making passage critical if Michigan wants to benefit from increased domestic productions.

The third and final part of Detroit New Wave — Campfire Film Cooperative's series with the Weekly Watchlist celebrating and expanding Detroit's film culture — is set for tomorrow at 6 p.m.

The series creates a space for Metro Detroit’s independent cinema owners, audiences and filmmakers to come together. Each event features a panel conversation followed by a social hour with food, drinks, connection and the potential for new collaborations.

NYT Best-Selling author Josh Malerman is the creative mind behind the hit feature films OTHER MOMMY and BIRD BOX, and he lives right here in Michigan! We’d love Malerman’s next book to be adapted into a film HERE in his home state! A pro-jobs, pro-economy multimedia incentive program could help make that happen.

You can catch Malerman tonight and tomorrow night at the Farmington Civic Theater to learn about this Michigander’s creative work and dive into the adaption process!

Small opportunities can lead to lifelong pursuits for budding creative professionals. That's certainly how it worked out for Eugene Wilson V, a Detroit-based cinematographer and commercial video producer.

In a recent profile by Voyage Michigan Magazine, Wilson recounted how an opportunity to film the Spartan Marching Band while attending Michigan State University served as a springboard leading to a fulfilling career.

New visitors to our page may wonder, what exactly is MiFIA? At a baseline, MiFIA is a trade association — a nonprofit group serving as the voice of Michigan's film, television and media industry in Lansing. Our core function is to provide grassroots advocacy to create a pro-jobs, pro-economy multimedia incentive program for the Great Lakes State.

But MiFIA is more than a policy platform. It is a community of experienced multimedia professionals with deep roots in our state who genuinely care about building a sustainable creative economy here. This spirit is best exemplified by our all-volunteer Board of Directors, who enthusiastically donate their time and talents to the cause all year round.

The film industry has been getting some attention in Washington recently, and it could mean big things for productions across the country — including right here in Michigan.

The end of September saw the introduction of the Motion Picture, Television, and Entertainment Revitalization Act in the U.S. House. The measure has an early degree of bipartisan support, and there's a sense of real momentum, with lawmakers saying that "we have never been this close to getting a federal tax credit passed."

At MiFIA, we are excited about the possibilities a national film incentive could have for our collective creative economy, and we continue to advocate for measures to incubate the multimedia industry at home in order to fully capitalize on its potential.

"I am here to tell you that we have never been this close to getting a federal tax credit passed. Never been this close," Senator Adam Schiff said, noting that there is bipartisan support, including the support of the White House.

“Michigan has incredible filmmakers and stories worth telling.”

That's what Cory James Taylor, producer and director of photography for the Michigan-made film “Without A Doubt,” had to say in a recent interview with MLive, and we couldn't agree more.

Taylor further express his belief that when "we bring that talent together, create opportunities and make meaningful work right here at home," great things result.

Another hard agree from us.

Taylor's project is one of several Michigan films being shown at the Vehicle City Film Festival in Flint this week. Running through Oct. 3, the festival includes expert panels and a filmmaker mixer in addition to screenings spread out across several venues, including UM-Flint, Flint Local 432, Mott Community College and the Flint Film Foundation.

Local talent will be able to share the screen with filmmakers from across the country while also building connections in the industry and introducing them to the city’s creative community.
