"The hospitals that received poor grades did not respond with a pledge to improve quality; they instead sued the messenger. Even more striking, they invoked a consumer protection statute to silence a consumer advocate and have since demanded that this independent nonprofit pay their multi-million-dollar legal bills. That inversion should give policymakers and onlookers pause." Read more: https://www.healthaffairs.org/content/forefront/suing-scorecard-won-t-improve-hospital-safety

If you are unable to find a grade for your hospital, check out the CMS Hospital Compare site and you will find that more than likely these hospitals who are suing because of a rotten safety grade also earn only one star from CMS. It's time to put patients first!

is key to improvements and lower costs. Thank you to all the hospitals participating in the annual The Leapfrog Group Hospital Survey. Two excellent sources for patients to gain a better understanding about hospital is The Leapfrog Group and CMS. Check out how Michigan hospitals scored this Spring:

The state jumped from 35th to 19th in national rankings as more facilities earned top safety marks. Search the database to see how your local hospital performed on critical measures like infections, medication errors and patient experience.

“Prioritizing patient safety is one of the most effective ways to save both lives and healthcare dollars. Preventable medical errors and infections drive unnecessary costs for employers, purchasers and families, while putting patients at risk,” said Bret Jackson, President and CEO, EAM. “We urge Michiganders to contact their hospitals and ask them to participate in the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, because transparency is a critical step toward safer and more affordable healthcare for everyone.”
