The 2nd Regional Pan-African Comprehensive Cleft Care Workshop is coming to Cape Town, South Africa, this November, and registration is now open. Here is what participants can expect:

🎓 Scholarships still available. A limited number of 50% partial scholarships for main-session registration remain open for cleft care providers from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), supporting professionals committed to strengthening cleft care within their communities.

Prof. Martin Persson, Professor of Health Sciences at Kristianstad University in Sweden, shares what sits at the heart of psychosocial cleft and craniofacial care: seeing every patient as an individual.

His message is about a holistic approach, training healthcare professionals to care for the whole person and not only the cleft. That is how we truly improve lives, one by one.

🌍 "When we think of the global community, we sometimes forget how many countries, especially in Africa, still don't have access to comprehensive cleft care."

Prof. Corstiaan Breugem, professor of pediatric plastic surgery, shares why closing that gap is the challenge that matters most, and where the solution begins.

His focus is ear and cleft surgery. His message is direct: providers in lower-income countries need the tools and training to deliver comprehensive cleft care within their own communities. And the key to getting there is education.

Our team just published a new study in The Cleft Palate Craniofacial Journal on work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMDs) among cleft surgeons.

Surveying 108 surgeons at an international cleft workshop, the findings are striking:
🔹 Musculoskeletal discomfort is highly common, especially in the neck, lower back, and upper back
🔹 Only 18.5% had ever received formal ergonomic training
🔹 Strength training stood out as a protective factor against extensive musculoskeletal involvement

The takeaway is clear. Ergonomics deserves a place in surgical training, not as an afterthought, but as part of building long, sustainable careers in cleft care.
