From surgical simulation labs to specialty workshops, from shared expertise to lasting connection, this is where training becomes real-world impact — and where the first Cleft Summit in Africa begins.

A look back at where it began.

The 1st South African Comprehensive Cleft Care Workshop brought together surgeons, specialists, and trainees for days of hands-on learning, shared expertise, and genuine connection — the kind of collaboration that strengthens cleft care long after everyone returns home.

What you see here is only the beginning of what awaits in Cape Town this November.

The 2nd Regional Pan-African Comprehensive Cleft Care Workshop builds on that foundation with an expanded program, more than 50 international and African faculty, and the first Cleft Summit in Africa — a continuation of the same mission, on a larger stage.

We are honored to feature Josep Rubio, MD, PhD — Head of the Maxillofacial Surgery Department at SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital — among the faculty of the 2nd Regional Pan-African Comprehensive Cleft Care Workshop.

At Sant Joan de Déu, a hospital dedicated entirely to pediatric patients, Dr. Rubio treats children with cleft lip and palate and other facial malformations, with a particular focus on secondary surgery: alveolar bone reconstruction, orthognathic surgery, and rhinoplasty. These are among the most demanding procedures in cleft care — the ones that shape a patient’s function, appearance, and confidence well into adulthood.

This is the depth of expertise we are bringing to Cape Town: faculty who devote their careers to the hardest problems in cleft care, and who give their time to share that knowledge across the region.

Co-hosted by Global Smile Foundation and the University of Cape Town, this marks the first Cleft Summit in Africa.

A cleft is never repaired by one specialty alone. Surgery, dental and orthodontics, speech pathology, nursing, psychosocial care, anesthesia, feeding and nutrition, and pediatrics — real outcomes happen when every discipline converges around one child.

That is what the 2nd Regional Pan-African Comprehensive Cleft Care Workshop is built to do: bring the full continuum of cleft care into one room. Not passive learning, but hands-on, simulation-based training led by more than 50 international and regional faculty, designed so that skills become lasting impact in the communities our participants serve.
