Ever wondered what a monarch butterfly caterpillar looks like? This caterpillar was feasting on some milkweed in one of our member's gardens recently.

This month, keep your eyes open for the largest pollinator species in our region: the eastern giant swallowtail (Heraclides cresphontes). This swallowtail has a wingspan of up to 6 inches. They are more abundant in the South, however, they still range as far north as Minnesota and Maine, and can be surprisingly common in northern regions, including Massachusetts. The wings are dark brown with yellow spot-bands on the upper sides, and the undersides are yellow with black, blue, and red markings. A pair of small tails on the hindwings distinguish them as members of the swallowtail butterfly family. Like many swallowtails, their large size and greater weight make them somewhat awkward when visiting flowers, so they will often flutter their wings continuously to stabilize themselves while perched to sip nectar from a flower. The eastern giant swallowtail’s caterpillars feed exclusively on plants in the citrus family. In Massachusetts, they feed primarily on a wild, native citrus relative known as prickly ash (Zanthoxylum americanum), as well as non-native citrus relatives such as common hoptree (Ptelea trifoliata), rue (Ruta graveolens), and gas plant (Dictamnus albus).

One of the spots in North Andover that our club maintains and waters is the urns and garden beds at Town Hall. We partnered with the town conservation staff in May 2021 to plant the pollinator garden in front of Town Hall. In addition, the Club designed and planted the other garden beds over the last few years and planted the ground cover Ajuga on either side of the entrance and beds where nothing else would grow.

Our club participated in National Night Out at the NAHS Tuesday night. Our booth featured a “build your own plant” project for kids of all ages, a raffle of a hibiscus plant and info on the NAGC scholarship given each May to two deserving seniors. It was a fun night to learn about all things North Andover!

Our club member Lyn Licciardello and her husband have remade their garden with native plants and rewilded their lawn. All of these plants are blooming now providing a good source of nutrition for many pollinators. Flowers pictured are black-eyed susan with balloon flower, common boneset, blue vervain, asclepias incarnata, asclepias tuberosa, early goldenrod, and blanket flower.

Every year, we tend the 6 garden beds in front of the bright yellow historic Parson Barnard House at 179 Osgood Street and keep them blooming and beautiful for the monthly open houses that the North Andover Historic Society hosts on the first Saturday of the month from May to October. This Saturday, in honor of our nations 250th , the Parson-Barnard House will have a special open house from 2-4. Stop by and see the Historic House Museum and Barn and then have a wander around the gardens. The house features the changes in lifestyle as experienced by four early inhabitants of the house from 1715 through 1830.
