It’s Election Day! ✔️

This year’s midterm ballot covers a lot of ground, from seats in Congress to the local races right here in Sussex County. Those local races don’t always get the big headlines, but the people we elect make decisions about our schools and the services our neighbors rely on. Your vote is your say in all of it, no matter who you choose.

Not sure where you’re headed? Look up your polling place at www.sussex.nj.us/302/polling-places.

Grab a coffee, bring a neighbor, and make your voice part of the conversation.

💤🛌🏼Did you catch that extra hour of sleep last night? Daylight saving time is over, and from here on out it’ll be dark before most of us get home from work.

If that early darkness makes you want to hibernate until March, you’re not alone. Shorter days really can drag down our mood and energy, and a lot of people feel it this time of year.

But there’s a bright side (pun fully intended). The time change gives us more light in the morning, and our bodies need it.

We all run on an internal clock called the circadian rhythm. Natural light hitting your eyes early in the day is one of the strongest signals that sets that clock. Getting outside soon after you wake up can help you:

☀️ Feel alert sooner, without leaning so hard on that second cup of coffee
😴Fall asleep more easily at night, because your body knows when to start making melatonin
☀️ Keep your mood steadier as the days get shorter
😴 Hold a more consistent sleep schedule through the winter

Try this: step outside for 5 to 10 minutes within an hour of waking up. Drink your coffee on the porch, walk the dog, or stand at the end of the driveway while the kids wait for the bus. Gray mornings still count, since outdoor light on a cloudy day is far brighter than the lights in your kitchen. No need to look at the sun. Just be out in it.

And if this season feels heavier than the usual winter blahs, that’s worth talking about with someone. If you're struggling with substance use, we're here for you. You can also call or text 988 any time, day or night.

👻 Some things are scarier than ghosts.

Like admitting you're struggling. Telling someone you're not okay. Or asking for help when you need it.

Whether you're feeling overwhelmed, worried about someone you love, or facing challenges with substance use, reaching out can feel intimidating. But you don't have to face those challenges alone.

Asking for help is a normal, healthy part of taking care of yourself. And sometimes, one conversation can make a real difference. 💙

🎃 Wishing everyone a safe and Happy Halloween!
