✨ Same mission. Fresh new look 🦦!

We’re excited to officially introduce a little refresh for the Elakha Alliance! Our mission hasn’t changed, we’re still working toward bringing sea otters back to the Oregon coast, but our look got a beautiful makeover 💙.

A huge thank you to Torrey Jay Creative for bringing our new visual identity to life with gorgeous, hand-drawn graphics and designs that feel every bit as wild, playful, and Oregon-coast-inspired as the work we do.

We hope you love it as much as we do 🙌!

Kelp forests sustain an incredible diversity of life, from massive gray whales migrating along the coast to tiny mysid shrimp sheltering among these lush underwater forests.

It’s part of our mission to help revitalize these vital nearshore marine ecosystems, not only for the countless species that depend on them, but for the generations to come. We just want to take a moment and sincerely thank you all for your consistent support - we're all in this together 🌏.

🤔 Have you heard of the term 'wrack line' before?

A wrack line is the line of seaweed, driftwood, shells, and other natural material that gets deposited along the beach by the highest reach of the tide or waves. It's more than just washed up debris, it's a mini-ecosystem.

🦀 Provides food and shelter for insects, amphipods, beetles, shorebirds, and other animals.
🐦 Feeds coastal birds, which forage among the seaweed and other organic material.
🌱 Returns nutrients to the beach as seaweed and marine organisms decompose.
🏖️ Helps build and stabilize dunes when organic material accumulates and traps windblown sand.
🌊 Connects marine and terrestrial ecosystems by transferring nutrients and energy from the ocean onto land.

On the Oregon Coast, you might see large piles of kelp, eelgrass, driftwood, crab molts, and other marine material along the wrack line. While it can sometimes look messy to us, leaving it in place is important for coastal wildlife and beach ecology.

Join us for a fun-filled Bingo Night at Claim 52 Brewing in Newport and help support sea otter restoration in Oregon!

Sea otters, kelp and carbon sequestration.. they are all intertwined ♻️

By helping to control sea urchin populations, sea otters influence the amount of atmospheric carbon absorbed and stored by kelp. The decline of this iconic predator impairs our own ability to address the climate crisis

📍 The traditional names for Oregon’s Otter Rock in Lincoln County and Otter Point in Curry County both translate to “sea otters' rock” in Tillamook and Dee-ni, respectively - suggesting that these locations were frequented by sea otters long before they were given their English names.

We can’t wait to see sea otters back here, where they rightfully belong 🦦.
