Next step was our Juneteenth celebration. It started on June 19 with a movie, Juneteenth: Faith and Freedom. We showed the movie several times that day so that everyone who wanted to understand what Juneteenth was all about was able to see it. Several community members enjoyed watching the movie. The following Thursday we had a full journey to Africa where we focused on the sight, sounds and taste of Africa. There was a mini museum, drums, arts and crafts and authentic African cuisine.

As promised, here's June activities. Let's talk about the reading program which is off to a wonderful start. Aniyah has done a great job of engaging our readers. Each week they keep their book of the week so they are also building a home library. They enjoy creating story-related crafts. Our older readers are reading chapter books. The book entitled The Garden took us outside to HEsources' garden to water and harvest the vegetables. Then we explored the Power of a Dollar and how to save money. They are now working on starting a little bank, a business and understanding savings, investment and income. Thank you to our education professionals for overseeing the events.

We are halfway into July, so I'm late with this post. We had an incredible June.

Our Juneteenth movie was a success. It gave us insight into what Juneteenth really is all about and as a result 27 community members are more enlightened. ♥️ 🖤 💚

Then the following week we enjoyed our journey to Africa. Thank you to our Ghanaian family who gave us a live glimpse of Africa. 🇬🇭 The food was delicious Wayne! Thank you to Carla for the free t-shirts and helping us make beaded bracelets and ink pens. And a special thanks to our neighbor Pam who played the drums 🪘 and allowed us time to dance 💃🏾. Asante. All 58 of us had an authentic experience. And thanks to FBC some got free phones.📱

Now let's not forget the summer reading program that's in full swing. 📕 19 plus children are attending and creating their home libraries weekly. Our older group is working on saving money and thinking of ways to start their own businesses. 📖 💰

Finally our community dinner - we served 261 meal and offered free clothing to all. Thanks to the Paces every father received a Father's Day gift. 🍽️ 👕👖

And now for the best news from our community...

6 members of our HEsources family got resumes, employment application help and had interviews!

3 are now employed! Congratulations to Tristian, Crystal and Stephen on this achievement.

Congratulations as well to our volunteer who now has completed his required community service hours.

2 families moved to stable housing with all the furnishings.

3 others decided to try a new way of life by entering substance abuse treatment.

We assisted 7 individuals with vital records and helped some of these receive benefits.

Congratulations to our HEsources family member, Aaron, on gaining full custody of his sons! We can do big things together!!

When one neighbor wins... we All win!🏆 And that's what commUNITY is all about!

• June 19: Juneteenth Movie. Shows at 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm. Popcorn, drinks & hotdogs.

• June 20: Aniyah's Reading Adventure. 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM. Fun for all ages! Must register.

• June 25: Journey to Africa. 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM. Virtual tour of Africa, free authentic African food sampling, arts & crafts and create your free t-shirts (while supplies last)!

• June 25: Free Phone Event in collaboration with First Communication Bridge Outreach. 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM.

• June 27: Aniyah's Reading Adventure. 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM.

• June 28: Community Dinner. 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM. (Still eating together since 2017!)
