Today, we’re celebrating the incredible shorebirds found along Louisiana’s coast. From beaches and marshes to mudflats and estuaries, Louisiana’s diverse coastal habitats provide essential food, shelter, and nesting grounds for countless shorebird species.

These birds play an important role in our coastal ecosystems, but many face growing challenges, including habitat loss, coastal land loss, rising sea levels, and other environmental changes.

Take a moment today to appreciate the shorebirds around you and remember protecting their habitat means protecting our coast, too! 🌊

Louisiana is home to a rich and vibrant variety of wildlife, each species uniquely adapted to the habitats around us. From turtles and birds to manatees and alligators, our coastal marshes, swamps, rivers, and estuaries support an incredible diversity of wildlife.

🐦 Bucktown Bird Walks are back!

Starting September 3, join Pontchartrain Conservancy and avian biologist Dennis Clutter for weekly birdwatching walks at Bucktown Marsh.

We’ll make observations of the birds we see and share helpful identification tips along the way to help you build your birding skills. Whether you’re an experienced birder or new to birdwatching, there’s always something new to discover at the marsh!

Explore the intersection of people and nature while experiencing Bucktown Marsh as an example of green and blue infrastructure.

Recently, Pontchartrain Conservancy staff planted freshwater submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) along the Violet Canal in the Central Wetlands. The vegetation was grown at Southeastern Louisiana University over the past year.

We also conducted our annual monitoring at previous SAV planting sites. Chief Scientist Dr. Eva Hillmann used a rake sampling method to estimate SAV coverage and assess how these plantings are doing.

We’ll continue monitoring this newest planting to evaluate its success and growth over time.

Freshwater SAV plays an important role in healthy aquatic ecosystems, providing habitat throughout the food chain and serving as nursery areas for many native fish and invertebrate species. 🌿

Wildlife Wednesday: Osprey

Did you know Ospreys are found on every continent except Antarctica? Also known as “fish-hawks,” Ospreys are one of the most widespread birds in the world. They live year-round in southern Louisiana and can be found along rivers, lakes and coasts—including the Bucktown Marsh.

Their diet is about 99% fish, which they catch by plunging feet-first into the water! They can be identified by their dark brown backs, white underbellies and reversible feet that help them grip slippery prey.
Ospreys are also an important indicator species, helping scientists monitor habitat conditions, fish populations and estuary health. In Louisiana, they are considered a Species of Greatest Conservation Need.

📍 St. Charles Parish residents are invited to participate in Flood Watch, Pontchartrain Conservancy's community science flood monitoring program!

During this training, Flood Watchers will learn how to document flood events, clear storm drains, and collect data from flood monitors located throughout the parish.

A one-time $50 stipend will be awarded for completing the training.
