🌱 Happy World Planting Day!

Today, we’re celebrating the trees, flowers, and native plants that help our local ecosystems thrive! Throughout the rest of the year, Pontchartrain Conservancy will host planting events featuring Louisiana’s native bald cypress, the official state tree.

Bald cypress trees provide important benefits for our coastal environment, from supporting wildlife to helping protect our wetlands. They’re also part of the Multiple Lines of Defense strategy, which combines natural features and human-designed systems to help protect our communities from storm impacts.

Help us grow a greener Louisiana, one tree at a time! 💚

Wildlife Wednesday: Roseate Spoonbill 🩷

Did you know the Roseate Spoonbill gets its pink color from its diet?

Native to Southern Louisiana, these striking wading birds can be found in coastal marshes, wetlands, and barrier islands. Their spoon-shaped bills help them find tasty treats like shrimp, crabs, and crawfish in shallow waters. 🦀

The carotenoid pigments in their food give them their beautiful pink coloring! Roseate Spoonbills are also an important indicator of the health of Louisiana’s coastal ecosystems.

From water quality monitoring and coastal restoration to community science and environmental education, PC works to protect and preserve the Pontchartrain Basin through science, outreach, and community partnerships. 🐟 Last week, Pontchartrain Conservancy welcomed the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries for our October Continuing Education session!

This month’s theme was Frankenfish! Participants dissected fish to find their otoliths, or ear stones, which help scientists determine a fish’s age. This information is important for studying fish populations and understanding their growth and reproduction.

After the dissection, our staff demonstrated PC’s Frankenfish program, which teaches visitors about the anatomy and habits of fish that call Lake Pontchartrain home.

Thank you to everyone who participated, and a special thanks to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries for an awesome presentation! Stay tuned for information about our next session in November!

Join Pontchartrain Conservancy on Saturday, October 24, from 8:30 a.m.–2 p.m. to plant 350+ oak trees on historic ridges in St. Bernard Parish!

Oak ridges provide critical habitat for migratory birds, help stabilize our vanishing coastline, and capture carbon from the atmosphere. By volunteering, you’ll help restore an important part of Louisiana’s natural and cultural heritage. 💚

📍 Meeting location: Violet Canal Private Launch, 2521 Packenham Rd., Violet, LA 70092
🌱 What to bring: Closed-toe shoes, water bottle, long sleeves, and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Boots, water, snacks, life jackets, and hearing protection will be provided.

⚠️ Important: The meeting location requires driving over a levee. If using Apple Maps, make sure your destination pin ends in 2699 Packenham Rd.

Come get your hands dirty and help grow Louisiana’s coastal forests!

🚲Over the weekend, Pontchartrain Conservancy partnered with Bike Easy for an ecological and historical lakefront bike tour from Bayou St. John to Bucktown!

Along the route, PC’s Chief Scientist, Eva Hillmann, shared insights into the history and ecology of the lakefront, highlighting the unique natural beauty of New Orleans.

We were also pleased to welcome Councilmember Jennifer Van Vrancken, representing Jefferson Parish Council At-Large, Division A, for the tour.

Pontchartrain Conservancy brought Ecology Jenga to the festival, teaching families about the ecosystems that make New Orleans and our surrounding basin so special. 🌿

Our outreach team loves connecting with our local community, especially over some good fried chicken! 💚

🌱 Welcome our new baby carnivorous plants to the New Canal Lighthouse!

In our little pot, we have Sarracenia, sundews, and Red Piranhas! Native to Louisiana, these small plants make great natural pest controllers, snacking on fruit flies, gnats, and mosquitoes. Under the rain barrel, these plants thrive in the wet, marshy conditions they love. 💧

Come to the New Canal Lighthouse and watch our tiny plants grow!
