In doing some research, we discovered this map and wanted to share this look back at this USDA poverty mapping.

Despite recent slight drops in national poverty, the high-poverty clusters from a decade ago remain exactly the same today according to recent data.

“Stressful conditions from outside school are much more likely to intrude into the classroom in high poverty schools. Every one of ten stressors is two to three times more common in high poverty schools-- Student hunger, unstable housing, lack of medical and dental care, caring for family members, immigration issues, community violence and safety issues.” Robert D. Putnam, Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis

As we kick off September and back to school, here are some quick facts on school age children from low income families in the US:

The median estimated poverty rate for school-age children (ages 5 to 17) in U.S. school districts is 12.5%.

Only 48% of low-income children meet school-readiness guidelines at age 5.

New food guidelines: Children qualify for free school meals if their family income is at or below 130% of the federal poverty level (FPL) ($3,575 monthly for a family of four). Families between 130% and 185% FPL qualify for reduced-price lunch.

Factoring in overall educational and food expenses, families spend close to $4,000 per child annually on school-related costs. Low-income parents have to cut back on other expenses or find different solutions.

We came across a short interesting article on giving trends across the US in 2025 and projections for 2026. With the 4th quarter being traditionally an important time for giving, this report highlights the shift in giving trends. It's clear: 2026 has donor and donations reductions.
