HOW FAR WILL A BUCK MOVE? One buck in a study moved 186 miles in just 22 days.

In November 2017, researchers tracking a 3½-year-old Missouri whitetail documented an extraordinary journey. Over 22 days, the buck traveled approximately 186 miles before establishing a new home range.

Along the way, he crossed a major river SEVEN times, along with an interstate, a railroad and eight state highways. GPS data showed he traveled more than five times faster at night than during the day, often using forest cover to shelter during daylight hours.

What makes this journey even more unusual is that mature bucks typically don’t make dispersal movements on this scale. Researchers couldn’t determine what triggered the trip, although it coincided with the breeding season and hunting activity. The 186 miles represents his actual travel path, while the straight-line distance between his starting and ending points was about 134 miles.
