Lakers great Magic Johnson once said "In life, winning and losing will both happen. What is never acceptable is quitting.”

This post won’t have pictures of us raising a trophy. We tasted the bitter defeat that makes winning so sweet.

But no matter the outcome, I watched our coaches coach up to the last moment, I watched players that gave their all even though the scoreboard didn’t look like they wanted, and I watched our parents cheering them on til the final buzzer.

We leave today with gratitude, lessons learned, and an eagerness to get back in the gym and put learning to action.

Tonight was a special practice. We had all 3 groups overlap in the gym to give some love to our 7th graders. Our 7th grade players play in their last tournament of the season this weekend, so for their last practice of the season, we came together and opened the floor for shares.

From coaches, we listened as they spoke about leadership, passion, rebounding, and defensive prowess. We heard about their eye contact and respectfulness. From the 4th, 5th, and 6th graders, we heard about how good of friends they are, how they appreciate when they see them cheering at their games, and how admirable their sportsmanship has been.

It was raw, it was real, it was a little silly sometimes, and it also got a little emotional. It was a great reminder of how individuals make a team and teams make a program. Very proud of our program and what they’ve learned and accomplished this season.

In the words of the great Kobe Bryant - “Job’s not finished”.

Excited to watch this group compete this weekend.
