Over the past two weeks, our members have participated in voluntary cancer screenings provided by United Diagnostic Services, LLC. Thanks to the support of our community and MB Fire Cares, these screenings were conducted at no cost to our members.

The members of the Myrtle Beach Professional Firefighters would like to extend a sincere thank you to Fire Chief Tom Gwyer for his relentless pursuit of cancer reduction initiatives; past President Brian Whittington for coordinating with UDS and MBFD to bring these screenings to our department; Matt Charizio, Karen Johnson, Debbie Johnson, and the P*e Dee IceCats for the tremendous work they put into making the MBFD ice hockey game a successful fundraiser for these screenings; and to our community members who purchased T-shirts or donated to MB Fire Cares.

Without all of these efforts coming together, this opportunity likely would not have become a reality.

Thank you for helping us take care of the people who take care of people.

This family-friendly night helps support firefighter hardship assistance, SC Children’s Burn programs, and holiday giving initiatives for families in need ❤️🚒

Cold beer, live music, great food, and a night dedicated to the people who show up when it matters most.

Build it, they will come! 🔥🔥🔥

Yet another example of how moving to the life and money saving 24/72, 42 hour workweek creates an explosion in recruitment and retention.

As Gainesville, Boynton Beach, Pasco County, Destin and now Palm Beach Gardens have shown, when you invest in your people, others will want to work for you too.

It is unacceptable to simply lower standards to fill seats, in a profession where lives truly are at stake. The solution is to create an environment that forges both performance and longevity.

This is not an anomaly, but merely a return to the competitive firefighter recruitment we saw only ten short years ago. I tested against hundreds, sometimes thousands for a handful of jobs and we can get back there.

The goal is to take the top tier of a list, not every applicant, to drive candidates to stand out with their fitness and resumes.

You can find a mountain of FREE resources on the 24/72 tab of the Behind the Shield Podcast website.

The rising tide lifts all ships! Who's next?? 🔥

Congratulations to Local 2345 Trustee Marc Crago!

Today, we proudly recognize the promotion of Lieutenant Marc Crago to Training Captain of EMS.

Captain Crago began his career with the department in 2010 as a member of Recruit Class 23. Through dedication, professionalism, and a strong commitment to service, he was promoted to Engineer in 2017 and later to Lieutenant in 2020.

In addition to his operational experience, Captain Crago has been an active member of South Carolina Task Force 2 (SC-TFII) since 2011. He has also contributed significantly to the advancement of EMS operations through his service on the EMS Protocol Committee and as a member of the QA Committee.

Throughout his career, Captain Crago has demonstrated leadership, commitment to training, and a passion for improving patient care and departmental excellence. We are confident he will continue to make a positive impact in his new role as Training Captain of EMS.

Captain Crago would like to thank his family, especially his wife, Ashley, for their continued encouragement and support throughout his career.

Please join us in congratulating Captain Marc Crago on this well-earned promotion.

Last week, the MBFD Ocean Rescue Class 11 finished their 70+ hour training to become certified Water Rescue Team Members. This training included both American Red Cross Certification as well as the USLA Open Water Lifesaving Training. These five members will join the other 40+ members on the team this summer as they take part in Ocean Rescue Patrols throughout the summer and answer water rescue calls all year round! Great job (from left to right) Jackson Mann, Christopher Puckett, Anthony Falco, Collin O'Shea, and Arika Boudreau!

What kind of firefighter or EMT would you want coming to your emergency? Fire departments across the country are making the shift toward a 42-hour work week (24/72 schedule) — and the results speak for themselves.
