We say a fond farewell to JoAnn Shaw who started the Phoenix Chapter of Ryan’s Cases for Smiles with just one other volunteer in October, 2014. As the Phoenix chapter Volunteer Coordinator, JoAnn put in countless hours and funded supplies to get the Phoenix chapter started. She spoke with professional organizations, church and quilting groups, and schools to raise money, and she applied for numerous grants to keep the chapter growing. She established a strong relationship with Kohl's, which provided donations and volunteers for several years.

The original goal in 2014 was to sew 50 pillowcases per month. Soon neighbors joined in and they had to move to the Corte Bella social hall to accommodate the volunteers.

Over time, the Phoenix chapter has grown to 125 volunteers, including the quilt shop partners in the Valley. There wouldn’t be an RCFS Phoenix chapter if it weren’t for JoAnn’s commitment, tenacity and dedication.

Today, the Phoenix Chapter ranks second in the nation out of 100 chapters for production of pillowcases, currently delivering 750 pillowcases monthly to Phoenix area pediatric hospitals. In total, they have delivered over 125,000 cases for smiles, helping sick children cope with the stress of life changing illnesses.

Thank you JoAnn, the volunteers look forward to seeing you at future sewing events and around town. Enjoy your well-deserved retirement, knowing that your efforts will continue with the dedicated volunteers and those who have taken on the new Coordinator roles.

Our Georgia Chapter volunteers had a fun filled afternoon sewing pillowcases at Stitched in Marietta, GA! The afternoon was filled with sewing and fellowship. A big thank you to Stitched for the opportunity to host a sew day at the shop, and to the many attendees for their help in delivering more smiles! 🧵

There are deliveries… and then there are deliveries that make you stop, smile, and take it all in. ❤️

Yesterday, we delivered 1,406 pillowcases to our friends at CHOP, along with 53 sibling Coping Boxes, our largest delivery of Coping Boxes to the various units to date!

We tucked in some extra-special Halloween pillowcases, too. 🎃👻 From pumpkins and ghosts to all things spooky and silly, these are ready to bring a little distraction, comfort, and Halloween fun to kids spending the holiday in the hospital.

Bedtime looks a little different when you’re in the hospital, but a little comfort can make a big difference. Wrapped in their favorite pillowcase and ready to rest, we hope every child feels a little more at home and a little more loved.

Look at all these smiles! We are so grateful to the New Eagle Elementary School community for years of support and for hosting a PJ Day on Friday to benefit Ryan’s Case for Smiles. Their continued kindness means more to us than we can say.

This year, we also had the wonderful opportunity to introduce first- and fourth-grade students to our sibling Coping Boxes and have them help assemble 50 boxes for children whose siblings are receiving care at CHOP. What a meaningful way to learn about kindness, compassion, and the difference they can make for another child.

Thank you, New Eagle, for continuing to show up for children and families and for filling our day with so many smiles! 💙

We have one week left of September to sew our hearts out for our Miles of Pillowcase Smiles campaign! Let's not lose momentum and finish out stronger than ever before! We need your help to reach our goal of 40,000 pillowcases, one for every child in treatment across the US. Thank you to everyone who has donated thus far and please keep those sewing machines running!
