As we are approaching the last big summer holiday weekend, we want everyone to enjoy their water activities safely and to be amoeba aware.

To help protect yourself against a Naegleria fowleri infection:

Hold your nose or wear a nose clip if you are jumping or diving into fresh water.
Always keep your head above water in hot springs.
Don't dig in shallow water because the amoeba is more likely to live there.
Where the water is the warmest in the shallows there is increased amoebic activity.

A fever on Thursday. Double vision by Saturday. An 8-year-old girl from Louisiana is dead after contracting a rare brain-eating amoeba. "Everyone did everything they could to keep her here. Last night Lillian ran from our arms to the arms of Jesus.

The injuries to her brain were too severe for her little body to recover from. Everyone did everything they could to keep her here. We are heartbroken and honestly do not know what to do next. How do we put one foot in front of the other without our girl?

Our foundation is still in Jesus. We didn’t get to keep our girl but we watched miracles happen on her behalf. We believe God is good. He will give us strength when we have none left. He’s given us a community of support that I don’t think can be found anywhere else in the world. Lil would have loved seeing everyone come together and she would have been right in the middle of it trying to help where she could.

We are devastated. We know you are too. Pray for our boys. They are going to need it so much. Pray for our friends and family, they are so sad and somehow still showing up for us. Pray for us, we won’t be able to do this without it.

We are so grateful to you for loving our girl.

Our hearts are broken for the family and loved ones of Lillian following the heartbreaking news of her passing after battling Naegleria fowleri, the brain-eating amoeba.

We extend our deepest and most sincere sympathies to her family, friends, and everyone who loved this beautiful little girl. No parent should ever have to face this unimaginable loss. 💔

Please know that Lillian and her family are in our thoughts and prayers. 🙏🕊️

8 days...that's how long it took for n.fowleri to take hold and destroy a life. 8 days after Kelsey McClains birthday she was gone.
It's been 11 years today and no matter how time may pass they are never forgotten. Our thoughts are with the McClain family on this day and always.

Today we remember Amoeba Angel Kelsey McClain. 11 years have passed since she lost her battle with nagleria fowleri. Happy heavenly 35th birthday! 😇 Her family is in our thoughts and prayers as no matter how time may pass they are never forgotten.

A very important reminder as we enter amoeba season:

If you use any type of sinus rinse — whether it’s a NeilMed rinse, neti pot, or another sinus irrigation system — please remember to only use:

✅ Distilled water
✅ Sterile water
✅ Or water that has been boiled and properly cooled

🚫 Never use tap water directly in your sinus rinse.

Water safety matters. Certain free-living amoebas, including Balamuthia mandrillaris and Naegleria fowleri, can cause devastating infections.

This awareness is deeply personal for Team Koral Reef 🪸. Two of our board members have lost daughters to two different amoebas:

💙 Balamuthia mandrillaris took the life of our beautiful Koral.
💙 Naegleria fowleri took the life of Kelsey.

We share this to honor their lives, educate our communities, and help protect others through awareness and prevention.
