Safer 17 - Murrells Inlet A community-led safety initiative focused on Hwy 17 in Murrells Inlet, SC. In memory John H. Oakes Jr I wasn’t an advocate for safe streets.

This wasn’t on my radar. Then my father was fatally hit by the driver of an SUV. I’m just a Yankee with strong ties to the South, who cares about the South and the community my father and family loved so much. I am making it my personal mission to ensure no one - no one - in Murrells Inlet ever has to receive the call I did.

In The News: SC 4th deadliest state for SC. I had the honor of sharing dad’s story. I'm thankful to this talented reporter for helping us progress our mission to make a hwy 17 safer.

Pedestrian fatalities are still up 72% from 15 years ago, despite a recent drop. But a few cities are choosing a different path, according to a new report.

When it comes to road redesign, this is the kind of transformation I am advocating for. I took this photo in West Palm Beach, a high-risk area that is actively working to implement safer infrastructure and drive positive change.

Yesterday I discussed my father and the dangers of Hwy 17 with reporters nationwide. I won’t stop till we see change.

Reminder: not everything’s a personal attack. You can find humor in darkness.

In South Carolina, two hours from Murrells Inlet, Samantha Miller was killed on her wedding night when their golf cart was rear-ended by an intoxicated driver at 65mph - 40mph over the speed limit.

Guess what? Golf cart crashes often go unreported.

Another failure in the system.

PS: No settlement can bring back your loved one.

Aric Hutchinson agreed to a $160K settlement two years after his wife was fatally struck by a drunk driver on their wedding night
