An association of painters from the B'Ham metro, living within 25 miles of Mtn Brook City Hall.

Founded in 1981, the Mountain Brook Art Association of Mountain Brook, Alabama, is a large association of local painters. The club strives to stimulate art in the community, encourage individual and group development and sponsor annual art shows. Membership is open to persons residing within a 25 mile radius of Mountain Brook City Hall. Also of note is that our annual spring show in Crestline Vil

lage is limited to two-dimensional painting and drawing. The holiday show allows hand painted ornaments and gift items. MBAA holds both day & evening meetings in throughout the year that have a social or group critique emphasis. Members have an opportunity to hear from a guest speaker or see a demonstration by a well-known artist at most meetings. The membership directory is updated and posted to our web page.. Newsletters are sent via email the week of each day meeting. Members are expected to be familiar with and uphold the MBAA Constitution and Bylaws found in the directory and to attend association meetings regularly. Annual membership dues are set at $40 and are payable in January. Click here for membership form. Active members who renew after Feb. 1 pay a $10 late fee ($50). NEW members join at $40 up to September then may join at a prorated fee of $20. The annual spring art show, Art in the Village, has been traditionally held in April on the athletic field in Crestline Village. Starting in 2022 the annual show will be moved to Mountain Brook City Hall just around the corner in the midst of busy Crestline Village and its many eateries and shops. Our artists will exhibit both outside and inside City Hall. Original two-dimensional art on canvas, board, paper or flat wood are acceptable mediums for this show. Publication of the show guidelines and registration occurs in January. Members are required to attend at least one meeting during the 12 months prior to the show to be eligible to participate in the show. For several years we have produced a two week holiday show at local malls like The Summit mall with part of the sales going to a local charity. You don’t want to miss Carly Strickland’s demo as we start our meetings in our new temporary location, Mt Brook Presbyterian Church (watch for email) on September 17th, 10am-12pm. Carly’s bio - “Carly is a painter, illustrator, teacher, and collage artist with a Bachelor's of Fine Art in Illustration from Savannah College of Art and Design. She never quite figured out that “Jack of All Trades, Master of None” is meant to be derogatory and not a challenge, therefore, she has fifteen years of professional experience in graphic design, children’s book illustration, pet portraiture, book/catalog layout and design, and art instruction. She works in oil, acrylic, cut paper collage, and, frankly, anything else she can get her grubby little hands on.”

Around 1873, shortly after moving to Argenteuil, Monet had a boat built with a small wooden cabin on deck, just enough room, in his words, to set up his easel. He got the idea from his friend and fellow painter Charles-François Daubigny, who had built a similar floating studio years earlier, nicknamed Le Botin, to paint scenes along the Seine, Oise, and Marne rivers.

The boat gave Monet access to views no one could paint from shore, sailboats gliding past, reflections shifting on the water, riverbanks from angles only reachable by drifting alongside them. He worked from it regularly at Argenteuil throughout the 1870s, and his friend Édouard Manet even painted him at work aboard it in 1874, with his wife Camille seated nearby.

Monet later brought the same boat with him to Giverny, mooring it near his water garden and using it well into his later years. He painted the boat itself several times, including a well-known 1876 canvas titled The Studio Boat, now held at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia.

The original boat no longer survives, but full-scale replicas have been built for exhibitions, including the one shown here, giving visitors a sense of the cramped, floating workspace where some of Monet's river scenes were painted.
