When Fred Powell was in his final days, Mountain Brook's first responders did more than their job — they kept his family calm, made the calls that needed making, and stayed with him until he was settled. It wasn't the first time. Two years earlier, they'd been there to help his wife, Bette, too.
So when the family lost Fred in January 2025, they knew exactly how they wanted him remembered. They made the Mountain Brook First Responder Foundation the only memorial in his honor — and the community responded overwhelmingly.
As Fred's daughter Wesley puts it, it's "friends taking care of friends." Our first responders show up for us in our hardest moments. The Foundation is how we show up for them in theirs.
