Think about your worst day.

Odds are that at some point on that day, you called 911. And a police officer or a firefighter walked into it with you.

Now multiply that by three, four, five times in a single shift.

"Sometimes it's very hard not to take aspects of that home with you." Chief Thomas Boulware, Mountain Brook Police Department.

It's easy to see the uniform and the badge. It's harder to remember that behind it is a person with a family, hopes, and goals of their own. Not an arm of the government. Not a robot. A neighbor.

The city is their employer, but this community is who they serve. And when this community steps up to provide a safety net for them, Chief Boulware calls it tangible evidence of the support behind every officer and firefighter in Mountain Brook.

Chief Chris Mullins has spent more than 30 years in the fire service. He'll tell you the hardest part of the job isn't the calls. It's what you carry home from them.

"This is not a job you come to, and then go home, and you flip a switch and turn things off. You can't unsee things that you've seen."

In 2006, his wife was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia. Terminal, the doctors said. Five years, if the medicine worked. Treatment meant MD Anderson in Houston, and the bills came fast: $2,700 a month for medication, plus co-pays, flights, meals, hotel stays.

There was no foundation then. There is now.

The Mountain Brook First Responders Foundation exists to bridge that gap for the people who show up when you call. Because as the chief puts it, the better we take care of them, the better they can take care of this community.

It's reciprocal. Always has been.

Katie Smith of Please Reply in Crestline Village can tell you why Mountain Brook isn’t like anywhere else. The police stop in every week to check in. The fire department, once a quarter. They know her name, and she knows theirs.

When Fred Powell was in his final days, Mountain Brook's first responders did more than their job — they kept his family calm, made the calls that needed making, and stayed with him until he was settled. It wasn't the first time. Two years earlier, they'd been there to help his wife, Bette, too.

So when the family lost Fred in January 2025, they knew exactly how they wanted him remembered. They made the Mountain Brook First Responder Foundation the only memorial in his honor — and the community responded overwhelmingly.

As Fred's daughter Wesley puts it, it's "friends taking care of friends." Our first responders show up for us in our hardest moments. The Foundation is how we show up for them in theirs.
