The Youth Shelter Program of Westchester (YSOW) is the only organization in New York State to serve as an alternative to incarceration for youth ages 18-25 within the criminal justice system. More than 40 years after the founding of YSOW, a pioneer in providing an alternative to incarceration programming for young people involved in the criminal justice system, our current leadership recognized the need for further disruption. YSOW’s historic focus on the individual has been critical in helping to heal individual trauma and to provide a path forward for young people involved in the justice system. The model has been effective in reducing recidivism, improving public safety, saving public dollars, & providing a structure of discipline and accountability for young people.

Last night, YSOW Executive Director Joanne Dunn was honored by the NAACP, but in true leadership fashion, she turned the spotlight on our young people and dedicated staff, sharing her awards with those who make this work meaningful every day.

Because true leadership isn’t about receiving recognition—it’s about lifting others as you rise! ❤️

At YSOW, we’re proud to serve our community, and just as grateful for the community that continues to show up for us. From our partners and volunteers to our families, supporters, and neighbors, every act of service and every show of support helps create more opportunities for our young people to thrive.

As we close out YJAM2026, we’re celebrating the connections that make this work possible. Because building brighter futures takes all of us.

Music is more than a creative outlet. It’s a way for our young people to express themselves, channel their energy into something positive, and work through their emotions in a collaborative way.

Through YSOW’s music program, our young people have the opportunity to explore their creativity, build confidence, and find healthy ways to express what words don’t always capture. Whether creating, listening, or finding their rhythm, music gives them space to grow, reflect, and discover new ways forward.

We’re committed to creating opportunities that support the whole person and help our young people recognize their potential.

Growth happens when we’re willing to listen, learn, and hold ourselves, and each other, accountable.

During our YouthCRED Youth Leader Workshop, participants engaged in an exercise focused on navigating verbal conflict and communicating effectively. Through honest conversations and constructive feedback, our young men practiced working through disagreements while learning from one another.

At YSOW, we believe in creating spaces where young people can grow together, build trust, and bring out the best in each other.
