Knowing how to use a computer confidently is becoming as important as knowing how to read, write, and communicate.

Environmental Leaders of Color (ELOC) is once again giving local high school students an opportunity to build the technology skills they will need for college, careers and an increasingly digital economy. This fall, ELOC will offer free Saturday computer classes for high school students at SUNY Westchester Community College’s Mount Vernon location.

Classes will be held Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon, beginning October 3 and continuing through December, with a graduation scheduled for December 12. The program will take place at SUNY Westchester Community College, 17 South 5th Avenue in Mount Vernon.

The program builds on ELOC’s continuing effort to make advanced technology education accessible to young people, particularly students from communities that have historically had fewer opportunities to participate in specialized computer and technology programs.

Environmental Leaders of Color (ELOC), a Mount Vernon-based nonprofit, has received a $5,000 Community Impact Grant from United Way of Westchester and Putnam to support its 2026 Summer SAT Prep Camp and help make college preparation more affordable for Westchester County students.

ELOC was selected from more than 160 applicants through a competitive grant process. The funding allowed the organization to provide full $250 scholarships to students participating in its summer SAT preparation program.

The grant addresses an issue that can easily be overlooked in conversations about educational opportunity: college preparation itself can be expensive. Families already struggling with the cost of housing, food, transportation and other necessities may find private SAT preparation financially out of reach.

ELOC’s Summer SAT Prep Camp is a 16-session, 72-hour online program led by experienced instructors through Google Meet. The program began July 18 and runs Saturdays and Sundays as students prepare for the September 12, 2026, SAT.

Our young people need opportunities to hear from leaders who have turned knowledge, conviction, and service into action.

Dr. Mair’s presence helped reinforce the message at the heart of our summer program: your voice matters, your ideas matter, and you can become a leader who creates change.

🌱🎓 THE GRADUATION IS OVER. THE JOURNEY IS JUST BEGINNING.

The 2026 ELOC Student Summer Program Showcase & Graduation demonstrated what happens when we connect education with exposure and opportunity.

Our students didn’t just study environmental issues. They researched, created, presented, and explored solutions to challenges affecting the communities where they live.

That is the ELOC mission.

We want young people to see themselves as environmental leaders, scientists, innovators, entrepreneurs, technology leaders, and problem-solvers.

We thank our students, families, speakers, educators, community partners, and supporters who helped make this year’s program possible.

Now we’re looking ahead to what’s next.
