Our June monthly outing brought participants together for lunch at Ellen's CAFE before attending the fascinating Wings of Liberty: A Live Raptor Experience at the Leesburg library. Presented by The Avian Reconditioning Center for Birds of Prey (ARC), this educational program introduced us to several magnificent birds of prey, including a special appearance by Max the Bald Eagle!

Attendees had the opportunity to learn about the biology, natural history, and environmental importance of raptors while exploring educational materials such as feathers and talons. The presentation also highlighted the significance of the bald eagle as our national symbol and the critical role these birds play in our ecosystem.

At New Vision for Independence, we believe that community engagement and accessible educational experiences help eliminate barriers to independence for people with vision loss. Events like these provide opportunities to learn, socialize, and connect with the world around us.

At New Vision for Independence, we see the impact of vision rehabilitation every day.

Orientation and Mobility training helps people with blindness and low vision travel safely and confidently in their homes, workplaces, and communities. From crossing streets and navigating unfamiliar environments to using a white cane effectively, these skills can open the door to greater independence.

At New Vision for Independence, we help individuals develop the confidence and skills needed to move through life safely and independently.

What Is Albinism?

Albinism is a rare, inherited genetic condition that affects the production of melanin, the pigment that gives color to the skin, hair, and eyes.

Because melanin plays an important role in eye development, most people with albinism have some degree of vision impairment. However, albinism affects each person differently, and many individuals with albinism lead active, independent, and successful lives.

Today, on International Albinism Awareness Day, we encourage learning, understanding, and inclusion while celebrating the contributions of people with albinism in our communities and around the world.

Today, New Vision recognizes International Albinism Awareness Day.

Many people with albinism experience vision impairment, but albinism is only one part of who they are. This day is an opportunity to increase understanding, challenge misconceptions, and celebrate the achievements and contributions of individuals with albinism.

Together, we can help build communities that are more informed, inclusive, and accessible for all.

This Vision Rehabilitation Week, help us spread the word about life-changing Vision Rehabilitation programs.

Children with blindness and low vision can thrive when they have access to the right support, training, and opportunities. Vision rehabilitation helps young learners build the skills, confidence, and independence they need for success at home, in school, and in their communities.

At New Vision for Independence, we're proud to support children and families as they build a strong foundation for the future.
