Looking for an accessible night at the theatre?

The SigPro Studio in The Villages will offer Audio Description and American Sign Language interpretation for its performance of Chicken & Biscuits on Wednesday, October 14.

Audio description provides live verbal descriptions of important visual elements of the performance, helping audience members who are blind or have low vision follow the action on stage.

Ever wonder what vision rehabilitation actually looks like?

Join us for an Eye Opener Tour at New Vision for Independence on October 15 at 10:30 a.m.

This 45-minute experiential tour gives community members a closer look at the services and training that help people who are blind or have low vision build skills for greater independence. Guests will tour our Downtown Leesburg office and take part in a blindfolded experience designed to offer a different perspective on navigating everyday tasks without sight.

October is Blindness Awareness Month.

It’s a time to recognize the experiences of people who are blind or have low vision, challenge misconceptions about vision loss, and promote greater accessibility and inclusion in our communities.

Blindness Awareness Month is also a reminder that vision loss does not mean a loss of independence. With the right skills, tools, training, and support, people who are blind or have low vision can continue doing the things that matter to them.

Have you ever played a sport by sound?

Some of our adult clients recently played several rounds of accessible chair beach ball volleyball. Bells inside the beach balls jingled as they flew through the air, helping players track them by sound. Participants with some usable vision wore blindfolds to even the playing field, while New Vision staff gently served the balls and called out names to let players know when one was headed their way.

Everyone kept their arms up and ready, listened for those bells, and did their best to keep the ball in the air! Once they got the basics down, we decided to make things a little more interesting by adding a second ball. That meant twice the listening, twice the coordination, and a little more chaos!

Beyond being a lot of fun, the activity encouraged listening, coordination, reaction time and the use of nonvisual cues.

Thank you to Morrison Methodist Church for allowing us to use space in the Life Center, right next door to our New Vision office.
