Who says building independence can’t include a trip down a lazy river?

Our kids program recently spent the day at Aquatica Orlando with Jayne, our Youth Services Coordinator. And while having fun was definitely the main item on the agenda, outings like this also create plenty of opportunities to practice everyday skills.

From water safety and navigating crowded spaces to keeping track of belongings, staying with the group, communicating needs and trying new things, real-world experiences give our kids a chance to put growing independence into practice.

And sometimes, building confidence looks a whole lot like splashing around with your friends.

Job skills aren’t always about doing the task yourself. Sometimes, they’re about helping someone else learn how.

This summer, Gisele, one of our teens, spent a lot of time working with younger kids at New Vision as part of her job skills activities.

Here, she’s helping twins Ava and Arabella practice an important kitchen skill: safely preparing food. The girls worked on cutting cucumbers and strawberries, using protective cutting gloves and practicing the care and coordination that go along with working in the kitchen. 🥒🍓

For Ava and Arabella, it’s a chance to become more confident and independent with everyday kitchen tasks. For Gisele, it’s valuable experience working with younger children: helping, guiding, communicating, and being responsible for a task from start to finish.

Job skills come in all kinds of forms.... and sometimes they smell pretty good, too!

DJ and Moses tried their hands at soap making over the summer as part of our job skills activities at New Vision. They made melt-and-pour goat’s milk soap from start to finish, learning to cut and prepare the soap base, measure and mix ingredients, add color and fragrance, pour the molds, and prepare the finished product for labeling.

Activities like this are about much more than making a finished product. They give our teens opportunities to practice following a process, working carefully and safely, measuring, making choices, using tools and equipment, and seeing a project through from beginning to end!

And this project has another real-world connection: the soaps are being made with plans to offer them for sale in our shop! That gives DJ and Moses the chance to see how the work they put into making something can become a finished product ready for a customer.

More than a 3D print is taking shape here.

Ryan, one of our teens at New Vision, spent part of the summer learning to use our new 3D printer as part of his job skills training. He’s gained hands-on experience with technology, equipment setup, troubleshooting, and the process of turning an idea into a finished product.

Even better, he’s using those skills to help create accessibility tools for people who are blind or visually impaired.

Pictured here are some of the tactile Braille flash cards we’ve been experimenting with. And this is just the beginning! As we get our 3D printing program up and running, we plan to offer some of the accessibility items we create for sale in the New Vision Curating Ability Gift Shop!

This one hits close to home.
We’re proud to carry Paul’s children’s books in our gift shop, and unfortunately, one of our own staff members has experienced this same thing.
Sharing because moments like this are more than an inconvenience. For someone who relies on a service dog for safe, independent travel, being denied transportation creates a very real barrier to accessibility and independence.
