💋🖤 A LEGEND. AN ICON. A CULTURAL REVOLUTION. REST IN POWER, TIM CURRY.
Today we lost the incomparable Tim Curry, and generations of LGBTQIA+ people are feeling this one deeply.
His career was extraordinary — Clue, IT, Annie, Legend, Muppet Treasure Island and so much more.
But for the q***r community, there will always be something particularly sacred about The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
As Dr. Frank-N-Furter, Tim Curry burst onto screens with audacity, sexuality, gender-bending glamour, humor and absolutely ZERO interest in fitting neatly inside anyone else’s box.
And something happened.
A movie that didn’t initially find its audience became a midnight-movie phenomenon — and generations of q***r people, outsiders, misfits and beautifully unconventional humans found one another in theaters.
They dressed up.
They shouted back at the screen.
They danced.
They experimented.
They expressed themselves.
They found COMMUNITY.
Long before many LGBTQIA+ people could safely be visible in everyday life, Rocky Horror gave people permission — even if only for a couple of hours in a darkened theater — to be louder, stranger, freer and more unapologetically themselves.
That’s a legacy worth celebrating.
At 1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture, we spend so much of our time confronting the messages that have told LGBTQIA+ people to hide, change, repent or disappear.
Today, we celebrate an artist whose most iconic performance helped inspire generations to do something radically different:
SHOW UP.
Fully.
Fabulously.
Unapologetically.
Thank you, Tim Curry, for the performances, the laughter, the fearlessness and one unforgettable character who helped generations of outsiders feel a little less outside.
