Bees and other pollinators are dying at an alarming rate from a deluge of toxic neonic pesticides. This is a direct threat to our food supply โ€” drastic bee and other pollinator declines could mean a future where higher food prices and food insecurity ravage our communities.

Florida Forever is an essential program used to acquire public conservation and recreation lands like some of your favorite Florida State Parks and state forests. But, just last week the Florida Legislature gutted the program and did not allocate any new funding to Florida Forever โ€ผ๏ธ Conserving natural lands is critical to protect and restore Florida's already polluted springs!

We need to hold our legislators accountable to protect our natural lands, water and wildlife!

๐Ÿ˜๏ธ Mt. Dora โ€” Mayor Proposes Joint Planning Agreement to Limit Overdevelopment
The most significant Lake County land use story this week, from WKMG News 6:
Mt. Dora Mayor James Homich has written up a joint planning agreement that, if approved, would stop the rezoning of rural lands to suburban or urban use. The JPA was discussed at a planning meeting on May 18. For context, in 2025, the U.S. Census estimated Lake County's population at over 450,000 people โ€” up from 380,000 in 2020, a 70,000-person increase in five years. (Wikipedia)
This is a direct LCDEC advocacy issue. The joint planning agreement โ€” covering the boundary between Mt. Dora, unincorporated Lake County, and neighboring municipalities โ€” would create a legal framework preventing rural-to-urban rezoning at the county's growth edge. Watch the Mt. Dora City Council and Lake County Planning Commission for the next steps on this JPA.

๐ŸŒŽ Did you know that what happens in Colombia this Sunday could ripple all the way to Lake County?

On May 31, Colombians head to the polls in a presidential election that has major implications for global environmental policy. Earlier this month, Colombia hosted the first-ever international conference specifically focused on phasing out fossil fuels โ€” the Santa Marta Conference โ€” bringing together 60 nations committed to accelerating the clean energy transition.

The outcome of Sunday's election will determine whether Colombia continues to lead on that commitment โ€” or reverses course.

Why does this matter to us in Lake County?

Because the Iran war has made crystal clear what happens when the world remains dependent on fossil fuels routed through a single chokepoint. Gas above $4.50. Global food prices spiking. European airlines canceling flights. The energy transition isn't an abstract policy debate โ€” it's the difference between economic stability and crisis.

The countries willing to lead on that transition matter. Colombia is one of them. Sunday's vote is one to watch.

๐ŸŒฟ At LCDECF, we believe local environmental advocacy is always connected to the bigger picture. Follow along as we track the stories that shape our world โ€” and our community.
