The people behind the work! 🌱💚 You’d be hard-pressed to find someone who loves gleaning more than Hillary. From early mornings in the fields to getting fresh food where it’s needed most, Hillary leads our efforts to connect surplus from Vermont farms with communities across the state.

Her energy, relationships, and genuine love for this work are a huge part of what makes gleaning happen. 💚

Ready to save money by making the most of your food? Join the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation for a self-guided Scrap Food Waste Challenge.

For three weeks, starting September 28, participants will receive short daily emails on topics like strategic shopping, meal planning, food storage, and use-it-up recipes. Small changes can add up to make big impacts; wasting less food saves money and is a climate solution because it prevents unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions from farming, transporting, and decaying food.

Turn your spare change into local food! 🥕🍎 Now through September 30, you can donate your change to Salvation Farms at the Morrisville Food Co-op !

Your small change can make a big difference. Salvation Farms works with local farms to rescue surplus produce and products—including vegetables, fruit, and even cheese—and connect them with community meal programs, food pantries, and food hubs.

That means local farms are supported, good food stays in our communities, and Vermonters can feed Vermonters. And because gleaning and surplus recovery are provided at no cost to farmers, it’s a win for farms, communities, and our local food system.

Next time you’re checking out at the Co-op, consider donating your change. Every little bit helps us move more good food from farms to tables. 🌱

Their support reflects a powerful connection: energy, farms, food access, and climate resilience are all part of the same system.

Too many Vermonters are making impossible choices between the cost of heating their homes, paying for electricity and other essential utilities, and putting food on the table. At the same time, the farms and community food organizations working to feed our neighbors depend on energy-intensive infrastructure—from refrigeration and cooling systems to keep fresh food safe and available.

Efficiency Vermont has programs that support both Vermonters and farmers in making energy more affordable and efficient. And like Salvation Farms, they recognize that building a more resilient Vermont also means addressing climate change—through smarter energy use and by reducing the enormous amount of food that can be lost on farms.

We were especially honored to have Mary Catherine Graziano, Efficiency Vermont’s Community Engagement Manager and a farmer herself, speak at our event and share her perspective on the connections between energy, agriculture, and our communities.

It’s corn!!! 🌽733 pounds of fresh corn gleaned!🌽

Our gleaning crew recently harvested 733 lbs of corn from Cabot Smith Farm- food that might otherwise have gone to waste, now on its way to Vermonters who can use it. 💚

This is what gleaning is all about: connecting surplus farm food with our communities while supporting Vermont farmers and building a more resilient food system.

A huge thank you to Cabot Smith Farm for sharing their harvest with us, and to our amazing gleaning volunteers who make this work possible!

A Small Organization with an Outsized Impact 💚

We’re grateful to the Hardwick Gazette Paper for capturing the heart of Salvation Farms’ work in a wonderful story about our third annual Farm-to-Plate Benefit Dinner at Sandiwood Farm.

The evening was a celebration of the farmers, volunteers, supporters, staff, and community partners who make it possible to connect Vermont’s farm abundance with people who need it.

When reporter Georgia Allen asked our Gleaning Manager, Hillary Bailey, what her favorite part of the job is, her answer was immediate: “Gleaning!” And then she added:

“I really like working with farmers and getting that food out to the people that need it.”

That really says it all. ❤️

Last year alone, our small team, board, and volunteers helped collect 73,000 pounds of food from 35 farms, reaching approximately 10,000 people through 65 food distribution sites.

We’re proud to be part of a Vermont food system where surplus becomes nourishment, farmers are supported, and relationships connect the abundance of our farms to our communities.

🌱 2,800 pounds of fresh produce—on the move!🥕🥬 This week, our gleaning and distribution work helped move 2,800 lbs of fresh produce from local farms and farmstands into our communities. 💚

A huge thank you to McDonald Farmstand , Pete's Greens, Firefly Farm at Burke Hollow , Cabot Smith Farm , and High Mowing Organic Seeds for making this possible!

Every harvest that might otherwise go unused is an opportunity to nourish our communities, support farmers, and build a more resilient local food system.

Annual reminder that produce with personality tastes just as good 😁

Studies have found that quirky produce is less likely to be sold, so choosing the irregular veggies at grocery stores and farm stands helps prevent waste!

What a beautiful evening! 💚 Thank you to everyone who joined us for Salvation Farms’ Farm to Table Benefit Dinner at Sandiwood Farm . From the gorgeous sunset over the fields to an incredible meal shared around the table, the evening was a wonderful reminder of what makes this community so special: good food, strong farms, and people coming together with purpose.
