Salvation Farms

Salvation Farms Build increased resilience in Vermont's food system through agricultural surplus management hungry, young, sick and elder.

What inspired us to seek federal non-profit status was the acknowledgement that Vermont has a tremendous amount of food that is currently available but underutilized. Additionally, Vermont has a great need to feed many of our state’s most vulnerable populations, i.e. We see that an independent entity must exist, whose sole purpose is the oversight and logistical support of capturing and managing o

ur state’s surplus agricultural bounty. We value gleaning, our roots and foundation, but we see the need to create broader programs in addition to gleaning that support a systems approach to food rescue. Engaging Vermonters in the management our states available food resources will build strength and stewardship of these resources.

The event was a powerful demonstration of how impact grows when communities come together to support the organizations working to strengthen our region.

We are especially grateful and humbled to share that Salvation Farms was selected as the evening’s recipient, receiving more than $7,500 to advance our mission of creating a future where all are fed and farms are thriving.

Thank you to the members of 100 Women Who Care of Lamoille for believing in the power of local solutions, collective giving, and community collaboration. We look forward to putting this generous support to work across Vermont’s food system.

Together, we can build a future where every harvest is valued, every farm has opportunity, and every community is nourished.

🌱 Honoring a Valued Partnership 🌱 Today, we gleaned 92 pounds of beets, lettuce, turnips, onions, and garlic from —a harvest that will help bring fresh, local food to our communities.

As Sterling College prepares to close its doors, we find ourselves reflecting on a partnership that has meant so much to Salvation Farms. Over the years, Sterling stood alongside our mission of increasing access to nutritious local food while reducing food loss. Their support, collaboration, and shared commitment to community have made a lasting impact.

Sterling’s legacy extends far beyond its campus. The college helped educate and inspire future farmers, environmental stewards, and food system leaders whose work will continue to shape our agricultural landscape for years to come.

We are deeply grateful for all that Sterling College has contributed—to its students, to Vermont agriculture, and to organizations like ours. Today’s gleaning serves as both a continuation of that shared work and a reminder of the lasting influence of institutions dedicated to the land and the people it sustains.

Thank you, Sterling College, for your partnership, your vision, and your years of service. Your impact will continue to be felt across our communities.

What a great evening of connection, learning, and collaboration at a recent Farm to School event at the People’s Academy!

was proud to organize this gathering alongside Vermont Farm to School and the , with support from the . Together, we explored how local food can strengthen school meal programs and support Vermont farms and communities.

Our panel featured farm-to-school nutrition staff, a local farmer, Martha Machia from Salvation Farms’ Processing Program, and Lotty Roozekrans from the Center for an Agricultural Economy to talk about the Just Cut program. Panelists shared insights and how they are working to help schools incorporate more Vermont-grown foods into student meals.

Guests enjoyed a fresh salad and pizza featuring vegetables gleaned through Salvation Farms, along with samples of hummus from Just Cut and cheese from Shelburne Farms.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this opportunity to connect, share ideas, and strengthen partnerships that help bring more local food to Vermont schools. 🌱🍕🥗

This morning, our Glean Team rescued 1,200 plant starts from 🌿

These healthy starts will have a chance to keep growing and contributing to our local food system rather than going to waste. Every glean helps maximize the value of the hard work farmers put into growing food and plants, while strengthening community connections and resource sharing.

A huge thank you to Knee Deep Farm for partnering in this effort and helping us put abundance to good use. 💚

Kevin’s story is part of Narrating Abundance, our new video series highlighting the voices of the people who know Salvation Farms best — farmers, volunteers, food access partners, and community members helping build a stronger, more resilient food system together.

For years, Kevin Lane has shown up for Salvation Farms — behind the wheel, making deliveries, connecting food with communities, and witnessing firsthand the impact of this work across Vermont.

Their stories remind us that this work is about so much more than food. It’s about people, connection, dignity, and care.

As part of our Spring Campaign, we’re working to raise $35,000 by June 30 to continue supporting farms and feeding communities across Vermont. Make a donation and check out our stories, “Narrating Abundance” at the link in our bio or at www.salvationfarms.org.

Watch Kevin’s story. Share it. And if you can, make a gift to help keep this work moving forward.
