Final day of youth STEAM "Art and Food Around the World" day camp, with today being Australia. We learned about boomerangs, listened to some Australian music, tried making a paper boomerang, painted boomerang templates, then prepared food ("Tucker"). Vegemite & Cheese Rollups, grilled onions and sausages ("snags"), and Milo (malted milk powder) balls, plus sliced kiwi. The descriptions of Vegemite ranged from "smells like cat food" to "salty" to "it might be good on beef ramen".

First day of Art and Food Around the World youth day camp, with today's country being Russia. Learned about Matryoshka nesting dolls and made our own with a paper template. Then prepared, cooked and ate stuffed cabbage, red borscht soup and blinchiki (crepes). Decided the food was okay or not as bad as we expected! Loved the sweet traditional Russian pancakes aka blini.

A good time was had by all!

Sherman Extension served as a guest speaker for the Sherman Library Summer Reading Program "Plant a Seed, Read". Topic was Garden Science with 17 kids attending, ranging in age from 3 to 13. First part was learning about what plants need to thrive (air, water, sun etc) then making bracelets with colored beads for each need. Second part was how composting is nature's way of recycling, and kids made compost bins layered with different colors of paper to represent compostable materials like grass, leaves, paper, dry leaves, kitchen scraps and animal manure.
