We are proud to introduce you to the new and improved Baptist Street culvert in Williamstown. The original structure was a 5-foot wide steel pipe with a 1.5 ft perch that prevented fish passage upstream. The new structure is a 15-foot concrete, open-bottom box that allows fish and other aquatic species to move freely to colder headwaters 🐟

New culvert incoming! 🏗️

Crane work to install this new and improved structure on a tributary of the Stevens Branch of the Winooski River took place earlier this week, under blue skies and the first fall colors.

Above this culvert, cold brooks and streams flow across 350 acres of predominantly forested land. This is ideal habitat for brook trout, but the undersized culvert formerly installed at this crossing blocked fish from swimming upstream to reach it.

In addition to supporting brook trout populations, the new culvert comes with reduced risk of structural failure and road washout during periods of high flow.

This project was made possible thanks to expert project management by Friends Of The Winooski River and the support and expertise of many partners: Lajeunesse Construction, SLR Consulting, Michie Concrete Products, Haskins and Associates Concrete, S.W. Cole Engineering, Green Mountain Waterproofing, and CCS Construction Inc.

The LCBP and New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC) are proud to have provided funding for this project, alongside Watersheds United Vermont, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Vermont Fish & Wildlife.

👏 Great culvert info from Trout Unlimited! We have a new culvert in the works on a tributary of the Stevens Branch in Williamstown. Keep an eye on our Stories for updates on construction progress. 🎥📸

The Winooski River watershed has more than 140 dams, but only about 30 still serve a purpose, according to Michele Braun, executive director of Friends of the Winooski River.

Many of the rest are aging, block fish passage, hold back sediment and can worsen flooding.

The Bridge talked with Braun about dam removals underway across the watershed, including why some projects are moving forward while others have been delayed by funding, permitting and opposition.
