Meet Gunnar.

He's a goofy, adventurous 3-year-old who loves Buzz Lightyear, Spidey, climbing, Nerf guns, books, the family farm – and following his big sister wherever she goes. ✨

He's also been fighting cancer for more than a year. 💪

Gunnar was just 2 when his family took him to urgent care for what they thought was an ear infection. But his mamma had noticed a bruise on his belly and tiny red spots on his skin. She asked the doctor to take a closer look.

That instinct led to an immediate trip to the Children’s ER, where Gunnar was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. 💔

Today, he’s still fighting – and fighting hard. He has been incredibly brave throughout his journey, but he still has a long road ahead before he can be considered cancer-free. 💚

To his family, Gunnar is the bravest boy they know.

What if we could outsmart childhood cancer by targeting every type of tumor cell?

In a study supported in part by St. Baldrick’s, researchers developed a new way to identify different tumor cell types in diffuse midline glioma and match them with targeted drugs. 🙌

When combined, these drugs worked better than a single drug alone and extended survival in preclinical models. 💚

Some promising combinations even used drugs already approved for other conditions. ✨

A tiny clue could make a huge difference for kids with eye cancer. 👁️

Researchers are studying a tiny new liquid biopsy tool called LBSeq4Kids that looks for tiny fragments of tumor DNA in fluids like blood, spinal fluid, and the liquid inside the eye – potentially reducing the need for traditional tissue biopsies. 🙌

In a St. Baldrick’s supported study of 60 patients with eye tumors, LBSeq4Kids detected cancer DNA In nearly every child with active disease – and every child who experienced a recurrence.

That could open the door to a less invasive way to diagnose, guide treatment, and monitor childhood eye cancer. 💚

Davian fought so hard. And he never stopped loving the people around him.

Davian was just 5 years old when he was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma in November 2020. 💔 His cancer had spread to his bones, and his family was warned that treatments might not work.

But Davian kept proving them wrong. 💪

After years of intensive treatment, he reached remission in April 2023. No tumor. No cancer. He finally had time to be a kid.

Then, in July 2025, his family learned his cancer had returned in his jaw. It spread rapidly throughout his body. 😢

For the next year, Davian endured chemotherapy, 2 stem cell transplants, radiation, surgeries, and MIBG therapy. His family searched across the U.S., Canada, and beyond for every possible option. They fought for more time, for more birthdays, more memories, and more childhood. ✨

Davian celebrated his 11th birthday with his family, his final one, before passing away just one day later in June 2026. 💔

"He fought so long and hard and the cards he was dealt were so unfair, but even up until his last day he worried, loved and cared for everyone around him. He worried about leaving his brother behind...he was such a pure heart and strong, smart, and brave kid," says his mom, Cassidy.

His story reminds us why research matters.

When Davian first battled neuroblastoma, MIBG therapy wasn’t an option. Years of research helped make it possible by the time his cancer returned. 💚

☘️⚾ A Home Run for Childhood Cancer Research! 💚

On September 18, the Syracuse Mets hosted their second St. Baldrick’s head-shaving event, and what a night it was! 32 shavees raised more than $43,000, nearly doubling their 2023 total! Among them were Mets General Manager Jason Smorol and long-time shavee Lynne Stiefler, the night’s top fundraiser.

One of the most heartwarming moments came during local news coverage when honored kid and childhood cancer survivor Jared Saya recognized Lynne as the nurse who cared for him during treatment. 🥹 Their unexpected reunion was a beautiful reminder of the lasting connections formed throughout a cancer journey. 💚

Since 2005, the Syracuse community has raised more than $8.3 million for St. Baldrick’s mission to fund childhood cancer research. 🙌 We’re so grateful to the Syracuse Mets and everyone who made this night possible!

⚾ Now, we’re challenging rival minor league teams to step up to the plate!
