You never know when an ordinary day can become an opportunity to help others. Derek came to the YMCA to sign up for a membership and ended up donating blood after spotting a Vitalant blood drive. As an emergency services professional, he knows that blood products can mean the difference between life and death in a crisis. We're grateful he took the time to donate and help keep our community prepared for whatever comes next. ❤️ Schedule your next or first blood donation appointment at vitalant.org.

Behind every successful blood drive is someone building connections that help save lives.

For the past 13 years as an account manager for Vitalant, Craig has partnered with organizations across Pittsburgh, from Downtown and the North Side to West Mifflin, Jefferson, and Elizabeth, helping bring communities together around a shared purpose: giving blood.

Whether working with longtime blood drive partners like BNY, PNC, or West Penn Hospital, Craig sees firsthand how one person's experience can inspire an entire workplace to make a difference. One partnership he's especially proud of is Bettis Laboratory, where blood drive coordinator Diana's personal connection to blood transfusion inspires incredible donor support month after month. Stories like Diana's, whose son needed a life-saving blood transfusion as a baby, remind him why these partnerships matter.

And Craig doesn't just recruit donors, he is one. As an O+ donor, he regularly gives Power Red donations so more patients can receive the red blood cells they need.

Thank you, Craig, for being a Community Champion and helping save lives one blood drive at a time. ❤️🩸

Last week, we gathered for the 10th Annual Rich DeFilippi Memorial Blood Drive, celebrating a legacy of service, generosity, and community. Rich dedicated his life to serving the citizens of Beaver County, raising a family with his wife Donna, and mentoring countless young people as a coach and role model.

Before his passing from lymphoma in 2017, Rich asked his family to carry on his spirit of helping others. Ten years later, they continue to honor that wish through this annual blood drive, helping provide lifesaving blood to patients in need.

Thank you to the DeFilippi family for your dedication and for making this blood drive such a meaningful and successful tradition year after year. ❤️

Robert donates so often, his family joked he should have a faucet on his arm. So he got one tattooed there!

The dripping faucet, with O+ in the center, started as a dinner conversation with his wife and daughter. Behind it are decades of donating.

He first gave blood at a high school drive in 1984. When a coworker battling non-Hodgkin lymphoma needed platelet donors, he began donating platelets, too. For roughly the past five years, he’s aimed to donate every other week.

“Donating just seemed like the right thing to do because I felt comfortable doing it.”

He was standing at death’s door. Then a stranger gave him more time.

In February 2024, Derek went to the emergency room struggling to breathe after months of worsening symptoms. Doctors discovered his iron counts dropped to dangerous levels and diagnosed him with a rare autoimmune disease called Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis.

He needed a blood transfusion immediately.

That transfusion became a critical turning point, giving Derek’s body the support it needed to begin the fight toward recovery.

“When you find yourself standing at death’s door, you truly understand how precious every blood donation is,” Derek says. “Someone I will never meet took the time to donate, and that gift helped save my life.”

Derek may never know the person who donated the blood he received. But he knows what their generosity gave him: hope, healing and more time with the people he loves.

Someone you’ll never meet may be counting on you, too. ❤️ Make an appointment to give blood: vitalant.org

🩸 Platelets may be small, but their role in patient care is anything but.

These tiny blood components help control bleeding and are essential for patients undergoing cancer treatment, surgery, organ and stem cell transplants, and other complex medical procedures.

Unlike red blood cells, platelets have a shelf life of up to seven days, making a consistent donor supply especially important for patients in need.

Every platelet donation helps support the patients who depend on this critical component of blood. Learn more: vitalant.org/platelets

Every blood donation has a story. What's yours? 🩸❤️

Maybe you've donated blood and discovered the incredible feeling of helping someone you'll never meet. Maybe a loved one received a lifesaving transfusion. Perhaps you've volunteered at a blood drive or helped organize one in your community.

Behind every blood donation is a personal story, and those stories have the power to inspire others to make a difference.

We're looking for blood recipients, donors, volunteers, blood drive coordinators, and family members to share how blood donation has touched their lives. Your experience could encourage someone to roll up their sleeve for the first time and help save lives.

Thank you for being part of something bigger than yourself.
