Welcome to all of our new followers.
It is so good to continue to increase the number of people learning about who we are and what we do for the Monroe County Community. Simce having a table at the BURGER WARS event, thanks Nathan Allen and Ryan Mink, and posting on Sepember 1st. about Childhoold Cancer Month, we have seen a 390 increase in folliwers. So periodically when we have that large of a followers increase I like to share who we are and how we got here. Followed up by what we actually do for Cancer patients, family members and caregivers. This is a great story. I admit it might be a little lengthy but it's extremly important.
In 2009 I was disgnosised with skin cancer. Several operations both arms and neck seemed to have things under control. 2015 things started changing and a bone marrow biopsy was done, twice, and quickly life changed. 2016 we did my "tell" and shortly there after it was Stage 4 time. CLL margial zone. My first round of Chemo landed me in intensive care with a violent reaction. Only option was oral chemo at 14k a month and at the time insurance had no obligation to cover it. I started seaching for help. I didn't know where to start or what I was actually even looking for. The things that I did find, I didn't qualify for because I wasn't poor or homeless. At that time, because I wasn't a Promedica patient, I wasn't eligible for the small amount of things that were provided by Cancer Connection. It was at that time, 8 years ago now, that I decided to create a nonprofit that provides every possible thing that a cancer patient needs in order to have the best chance for survival or best amount of comfort care if survival was not obtainable. I created Ribbons of Monroe Inc a 501C3 nonprofit for serving our cancer community. We have grown tremendously. I have networked with in home care agencies, support groups, service providers, we have medical equipment like wheelchairs, beds, walkers, medical supplies and professionals covering every aspect of life from attorneys, financial planners to end of life providers. We now also have been involved with helping families with organizing fundraisers for the cancer patient to assist with the unexpected health care costs. This element of our services is growing exponentially as families are not prepared for what happens to them after being diognosed.
I feel like I getting lengthy here so I'll pick up where I'm leaving off here with the next post. More about what we do and where we are going in the future will follow.
We are soley funded by DONATIONS, grants and fundraisers. Every dollar is used right here in Monroe County helping you and your family and neighbors with their day to day challenges. With growth, we require the funding to continue to make it all possible.
