Benchmark Family Services, Inc. was established in 1994 and is a private, faith based, non-profit, therapeutic foster care agency.

Our goal is to provide stable, out-of-home placements for children in need, working with child welfare agencies to provide quality care to youth in the least restrictive setting possible. Our purpose is to provide stable and caring homes for youth in need of out-of-home care. Our mission is to advocate for children by ensuring opportunities for healthy physical, psychological and emotional growth

Benchmark Family Services, Inc. services children who have been removed from their homes by the Department of Children’s Services (DCS) due to neglect, physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse suffered in their biological home. Most of the children served by Benchmark are experiencing behavioral, emotional, and/or mental health problems as a result of being abused or neglected and receive therapy either on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Additionally, some children are under the care of a psychiatrist and receive medications to manage their mental health needs. Why Choose Benchmark? Benchmark provides strong and consistent support to our foster care families. We provide:
Each foster care family with weekly contact with their case manager, including a minimum of two home visits per month
24 hour/7 day a week emergency cell phone access to a case manager in the event of a crisis
Respite care for foster children when needed
Premium financial compensation to support the needs of youth placed in the home

A great reminder to practice the pause and regulate yourself before helping your child regulate!

Practicing the Pause takes practice!!

So here’s a little encouragement for whoever needs it today: Parenting thoughtfully doesn't mean parenting perfectly. Some days the pause comes easily. Other days we catch ourselves halfway through a reaction and have to reset mid-sentence. Both of those are still progress.

Our kids don't need us to have it all figured out. They need us willing to keep practicing, right alongside them, one moment at a time.

Dear prospective foster parent,

We need you to get attached.

I know—that probably sounds like the opposite of what you’ve been told.

You’ve probably heard, “Don’t get too attached. They might leave.”

But here’s the thing: we want you to get attached.

We want you to learn their favorite snack. We want you to know how they like their bedtime story read. We want you to celebrate the little things—the first smile, the first good night, the first time they call your home “home.”

We want you to care when they’re having a hard day. We want you to celebrate when they have a good one. We want you to love them enough that saying goodbye will hurt.

Because children in foster care don’t need someone who can promise they’ll never have to leave.

They need someone willing to love them while they’re here.

Sometimes, getting attached means you’ll eventually have to let go. And yes, that part can be incredibly hard.

But the goal of foster care isn’t to make a child part of your family forever. The goal is to give them safety, stability, connection, and love while their family works toward what comes next.

So please, get attached.

Get attached to the bedtime routines.
Get attached to the silly jokes.
Get attached to the messy fingerprints.
Get attached to the little victories.
Get attached to them.

Love them for as long as they’re yours to love.

And when the time comes to let go, know that the love you gave them was never wasted. You may be the person they remember who showed them that they were worth loving.

So yes… We need you to get attached.
