You’re Invited: Veterans Day Open House at Mishawaka Troop Town

📅 Wednesday, November 11, 2026 (Veterans Day)
🕚 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM
📍 1225 E Jefferson Blvd, Mishawaka

This Veterans Day, come see what honoring veterans looks like 365 days a year. Mishawaka Troop Town is home to Indiana’s only Veteran Tiny Home community, where veterans who were facing homelessness now have a safe place to live, a case manager in their corner, and neighbors who understand what they’ve been through.

Walk the campus, step inside a Tiny Home, and meet the people behind the mission. Bring your family, your friends, and your questions.

If you know a veteran who needs a place to land, come talk with us or call 574-273-7311.

No one who served should have to sleep outside. Come see how Mishawaka is doing something about it.

It's Meet Your National Ambassadors Monday!

Jessica Gardner of Ohio is our 2026-2027 National Americanism Ambassador/Patriotic Instructor. A Life Member of Stuart Patterson Memorial Auxiliary 2800, she joined on the eligibility of her father, who served in the U.S. Air Force. Gardner has served the organization in many capacities, including Auxiliary, District and Department President. She is also currently serving as the 2026-2028 National District Council Member Area D.

One of her focuses as National Americanism Ambassador is the creation of POP Signs. She writes, "We have all seen posters from World War II which depict icons like Uncle Sam and Rosie the Riveter, asking you to join the military and do your part. Today people’s attention spans are even shorter than they were in the ‘40s. So, let’s try a technique that worked in the past. Use a POP Sign to get people’s attention. POP stands for a Point-of-Purchase display, a marketing tool used to promote products and inspire people to act. America is our product and by incorporating symbols like the American Flag, bald eagles, the Statue of Liberty and other patriotic imagery we can use the POP Sign to promote Americanism... Enjoy making your signs and be creative!"

Learn more about our National Ambassadors from their complete bios, available in MALTA under Member Resources - National Line Officer/Positions Biographies.

Housing is the beginning; stability is the goal.

So what happens in between?

Often, our opportunity to help a veteran begins because of a conversation around housing instability and homelessness. We've heard so many stories, stories that would break anyone's heart. Men and women who risked their lives and left their families for years to serve and protect our country, and who came back different. They tried to adjust, but they were looking at the world around them with different eyes. Nothing felt safe anymore; they were always on edge. The smallest detail or even a loud sound could bring up a memory they can't even begin to speak about. Before long, the responsibilities of civilian life become difficult to maintain while they fight an unseen war inside.

Often, by the time they find us, they have been living on the streets, in their vehicles, or couch surfing with friends and family, never knowing where they will stay next.

Nothing--and I mean absolutely nothing--surprises us. Because their story could have been my story. Or yours.

If you've lived with PTSD, you know at least a piece of what I'm talking about.

But the housing instability was never the root problem. It's a symptom. It's a crack in their otherwise strong persona. It's a sign that they could use care and support to find their way back to themselves again.

So, we start there. Because homelessness doesn't need to be an exacerbating factor. And here's the difference the transitional housing makes: it gives them a place to call their home. A place where they can feel safe. A place where they are among fellow veterans who understand what they're going through. And most of all, a place where they can breathe, heal, and rebuild.

If you've thought we're a transitional housing program for veterans, that's a good start. But that's only the beginning. There is so much more to our program than simply housing veterans in need. We aim to help them truly heal and rebuild their lives.

After all they have sacrificed, they deserve that and so much more.

We are here to help them achieve the life they truly deserve.
