It’s been two years since we finally stopped a fraudulent rescue, who was intaking specifically special needs dogs on a very calculative, manipulative basis. In 2019, I met April because of her CH dog, Clyde, through special needs dog social media. She also claimed to run a nonprofit rescue. However, after several months, I started to see some concerning red flags in how she ran her rescue. She did NOT run a rescue how a rescue is normally run, and I started seeing more special needs dogs going in, than I saw were receiving any veterinary care, and than she was adopting out. In fact, her website wasn’t complete, and none of the dogs were available for adoption. Out of concern, I found the original rescue of a dog she was in the process of intaking, despite already having multiple very handicapped dogs. After realizing how she lied to them, the rescue immediately ceased and retracted their adoption of the dog. I, then, found the original rescue of another dog (Marley) I was very concerned about in her care, and urged them to do a welfare check on the dog. Upon seeing his extreme deteriorating condition, they immediately reclaimed him. We were able to save one other dog from her as well, as a rescue reclaim, due to unpaid bills and no veterinary care received. Unfortunately, she euthanized one of the healthy remaining dogs, Rex, whose original rescue was trying to reclaim, out of spite. After the events of 2019, we knew she was not in the right position to have dogs, let alone special needs ones. We were extremely concerned about her repeating her behavior, so we made a website and social media pages with her name, evidence, and warnings to potential rescues or shelters looking to adopt their dogs to her. Unfortunately, she changed her name, started a new rescue, and apparently kept continuing, until finally Becca became concerned about her dog she adopted to April in 2023. Today, the judge sentenced April to a total of 3.5 years in jail for animal cruelty and fraud charges, which is disappointing. She’s already served 2yrs, which means she will be free in just a year.
