PA Vent Camp

PA Vent Camp โ€ฆ Where children & adults who require mechanical ventilation to breath can live without limits!

There are many camps for children with disabilities (asthma, cancer, heart disease, diabetes and muscular dystrophy) but, only a few are for ventilator dependent children. In part this is due to the critical mass of ventilator children in any geographic area but, also due to the need for intensive and comprehensive care to be available to each ventilator dependent camper 24 hours per day. The need

s of ventilator dependent children for supportive care and wheelchair access not only limit the recreational activities but define the campsite as well. Thus other camp programs would be unable to tailor their activities and facilities to fit the needs of the ventilator dependent camper much less to provide the staff necessary for 24 hour per day care.

From the Review: Mike Fadale โ€™09 Manages Emergency Care Aboard Life Lion

A boyhood obsession with helicopters and a passion for providing life-saving care led Mike Fadale โ€™09 to a career as a flight nurse. In March 2026 โ€“ with 27 years of healthcare experience that included 21 years as a registered nurse and 14 years as a flight nurse โ€“ he was named chief flight nurse aboard Penn State Health Life Lion Critical Care Transport, which is based at the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

Fadale began his tenure with Life Lion as a part-time flight nurse โ€“ a specialized registered nurse who provides critical emergency care and life support to patients aboard helicopters during medical transport โ€“ in 2014 and then transitioned to full-time in 2017. โ€œI have been at Life Lion full-time since then,โ€ he says. โ€œI interviewed for and took on the challenge of being chief flight nurse, which involves oversight of the nursing staff and quality management of the program.โ€

His journey to his current role began at a young age. โ€œI have loved helicopters since I was about 5 years old,โ€ he says. โ€œI grew up in the Lehigh Valley, and my mom knew one of the pilots at Lehigh Valley Health Network MedEvac. They took me to see the helicopter up close and gave me a MedEvac keychain with a house key on it. They told me it was a key to the helicopter. From there, I was obsessed and had a strong fascination for helicopters and aviation.โ€

In high school, Fadale โ€œleaned toward doing something medical.โ€ He joined a healthcare explorer post at Lehigh Valley, and at 17, took a course to become an emergency medical technician. He worked or volunteered part-time as an EMT during high school and throughout his time at Millersville University.

โ€œI was able to interact with and help offload the MedEvac crews when they flew in,โ€ as a support partner for Lehigh Valley. โ€œAs an EMT, I would occasionally have to call for a helicopter and always had amazing interactions with flight providers. They provided a sense of calm, had an enormous amount of autonomy, and always seemed to know what to do in some very chaotic situations. Seeing them in those moments was what made me want to work in flight medicine. Their level of skill, compassion and professionalism set the standard that I would strive for in my own practice. My goal was to start flying by the age of 30.โ€

โ€œI initially started at MU in 2000 out of high school with plans on going the bio/pre-med route,โ€ Fadale says. โ€œPart way through, I opted to transition to nursing school for my diploma classes in nursing. I graduated in 2005 but always planned to return to MU to finish my BSN. You could say my path to nursing was not the most traditional.โ€

After graduating from nursing school, Fadale worked in the emergency room at Lancaster General Hospital. He pursued his certification as a pre-hospital registered nurse so that he could continue working in emergency medical services and eventually move to flight nursing.

Fadale returned to Millersville, as planned, and completed his BSN in 2009 as a commuting student. In 2011, he applied for a position as a flight nurse with Lehigh Valley MedEvac and was selected. He started his flying career in 2012, nearly meeting his goal of flying by 30.

โ€œWorking in flight medicine is a privilege, and quite honestly is the best office view in the world,โ€ he says. โ€œEven after some of the most challenging patient transports, there is something calming and peaceful about the flight back to base that helps put everything into perspective.โ€

In addition to his work as a flight nurse, Fadale has also volunteered with Pennsylvania Vent Camp for 25 years, an opportunity he learned about as a Millersville student and member of the Respiratory Therapy Club. โ€œI attended my first time as a Millersville student,โ€ Fadale says. โ€œThe free camp is for children who are ventilator-dependent in some way. We take them swimming, ziplining, rock wall climbing and fishing, and they participate in events like a carnival, talent show and camp dance. This camp requires two to three counselors for each camper as well as many other medically trained staff helping to make sure these kids can have a safe and fun week. I function as a team leader, ensuring all campers in my cabin receive their required daily treatments, medications and therapies. โ€œMany of these children require care around the clock. Pennsylvania Vent Camp is a week that provides these kids with experiences to help them feel like typical children, and itโ€™s a week of respite for the families.โ€

Fadale has also dedicated more than a decade to the public safety aviation community through Every Coast Helicopter Operations. โ€œECHO is a nonprofit organization that is 100% volunteer-operated and works to provide low-cost education, peer support, safety standards and future flight clinician training across the entire public safety aviation community,โ€ he says.
In 2017, Fadale helped develop and implement the ECHO Flight-Crew Assistance and Support Team, a โ€œdeployable, boots-on-the-ground group that provides peer support and assistance to flight crews across the country who have experienced a major incident or crash. We recognized that we in healthcare โ€“ and specifically, public safety aviation โ€“ do not do a great job of supporting ourselves, and we wanted to change that for the industry.โ€

Fadale served on ECHOโ€™s board and assists with the Future Flight Crew team that trains future flight clinicians to be better prepared for entry into the industry. His most recent role with the organization is volunteering as a co-host for the Valor Flight Crew Podcast, a collaborative effort between ECHO and Vertical Valor Plus magazine to promote the personnel and equipment behind helicopter air ambulance services. Sponsorship dollars collected by the magazine go back to ECHO and, ultimately, to the frontline crews.

โ€œThe mission of ECHO really speaks to me,โ€ he says. โ€œAt the end of the day it doesnโ€™t matter what color flight suit you wear, what helicopter you fly in, or what kind of transports you do. We can all learn from each other and make this industry safer and better for both our patients and us.โ€

๐Ÿšจ WE NEED ONE NIGHT NURSE. ๐Ÿšจ

And right now, one volunteer could make all the difference for Horizons.

We are still looking for volunteers for PA Vent Campโ€™s Horizons Retreat, September 11โ€“13, but our most urgent need is a nurse who can cover the night shift - Especially on Friday night.

We cannot safely hold Horizons without this position filled.

Horizons is a weekend retreat for adults who rely on ventilators to breathe. Many have been part of PA Vent Camp since they were kids, and this weekend gives them something they look forward to all year โ€” time with longtime friends, independence, laughter, activities, and a weekend away from their everyday routines.

โค๏ธ Could you give one weekend?
โค๏ธ Are you an RN or LPN who could cover nights?
โค๏ธ Do you know a nurse who might say yes if you personally asked them?

PLEASE SHARE THIS WITH THE NURSES IN YOUR LIFE. One share to the right person could be what allows Horizons to happen.

We can also use additional nurses, respiratory therapists, partners/caregivers, medical professionals, students, and general volunteers. There is a place for you at Horizons.

๐Ÿšจ WEโ€™RE GETTING CLOSER โ€” BUT HORIZONS STILL NEEDS YOU! ๐Ÿšจ

Weโ€™ve had quite a few amazing volunteers sign up over the last week or two โ€” and that is GREAT news.

But weโ€™re not there yet.

We still need:

๐ŸŒ™ Night-shift nurses
๐Ÿฉบ RNs or LPNs
๐Ÿซ Respiratory therapists
๐Ÿ’™ Partners/caregivers

Horizons is PA Vent Campโ€™s weekend retreat for adults who rely on ventilators to breathe. Many have been part of PA Vent Camp since they were kids, and this weekend gives them something they look forward to all year โ€” time to reconnect with longtime friends, enjoy some independence, relax, laugh, try activities, and simply get away from the everyday routine.

And volunteers are what make that possible.

You donโ€™t have to be a medical professional to help. Partners and caregivers are a HUGE part of the weekend โ€” hanging out, helping with activities, supporting day-to-day needs, and making sure everyone gets to enjoy the retreat.

Medical volunteers help us provide the safe, experienced support that allows the weekend to happen.

We need to have enough volunteers committed by August 24 so we know we can safely hold Horizons.

If youโ€™ve been thinking about volunteeringโ€ฆ this is the time.

Come spend a weekend with some genuinely fun people, make new friends, help create a little more independence โ€” and be part of the reason Horizons happens this September. ๐Ÿ’™

THIS WEEKEND CANโ€™T HAPPEN WITHOUT VOLUNTEERS.

Horizons is one of the best weekends of the yearโ€”but right now, we desperately need more people to help make it possible.

For many of the young adults who rely on ventilators to breathe, PA Vent Camp has been a cherished part of their lives since childhood. Horizons is their chance to reconnect with lifelong friends, relax, laugh, try something new and enjoy a weekend away from the limitations of everyday life.

And honestly - itโ€™s an incredible weekend for volunteers, too.

Youโ€™ll meet some truly amazing people, make new friends and help create the support and independence that allow everyone to simply hang out and enjoy being together.

We need nurses, respiratory therapists, medical professionals, healthcare students, support staff and enthusiastic helpers. You do not need a medical backgroundโ€”just a caring heart, a positive attitude and a willingness to be part of something special.

Give one weekend. Help make their weekend possible.
