CooperRiis

CooperRiis We believe Recovery from severe mental health and substance abuse conditions is attainable.

Our healing mission is to improve the lives of individuals struggling with mental illness or other mental health challenges by helping them work towards achieving their highest levels of functioning and fulfillment. Philosophy, Vision, & Program

VISION
We envision a future where the stigma against individuals with mental health conditions, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, paranoid schizophrenia,

depression, anxiety, and personality disorders, including borderline personality disorder and OCD, has disappeared. CooperRiis is a place of integration and Recovery of wholeness where isolation is replaced by relationships and where the mind, body, and spirit are nurtured. Each staff member is a beacon of hope and facilitates Recovery of Recovery for the residents and community members of CooperRiis. We believe that dis-ease can be replaced by at-ease, and hope can emerge. HISTORY
Don Cooper and Lisbeth Riis Cooper are the philanthropic leaders who co-founded and opened the CooperRiis Healing Community on June 15, 2003, and continued as Board Chairman and Vice-Chair since opening. The Coopers formed a Board of Directors and established CooperRiis, Inc. as a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit corporation, which functions privately and operates under North Carolina licensure. Don, Lisbeth, and the Board carefully guided the construction of safe and beautiful facilities, which provide CooperRiis with a warm, home-like environment for residents and staff alike. CooperRiis is a voluntary program, and services are available to a broad spectrum of individuals; about half of our residents’ families receive scholarships. CORE VALUES
CooperRiis is a therapeutic community guided by the principles of Recovery. It stands on the shoulders of a long tradition started by Gould Farm in Massachusetts and Spring Lake Ranch in Vermont and a shared belief that personal growth emerges from compassionate and humanistic care in an environment that incorporates collaborative work and recreational activities. Within our therapeutic community, each staff member pledges to behave in a manner that fosters and values:

• A culture of emotional and physical safety;
• A personal life of meaning, belonging, hope, and purpose;
• An atmosphere of kindness, respect, and open and authentic communication;
• Each person’s ideas, input, service, and contribution to the work and social life of the community;
• Interactions that create a feeling of being at home and at ease in the special physical environment of CooperRiis; and
• Quality relationships based on genuine empathy and mutuality.

We’re hiring a therapist at The Farm.

You’ll pass your client in the garden on Tuesday and know exactly what to ask about on Thursday 🌻

Our Integrative Clinical Therapist works with adults in long-term residential care in Mill Spring, alongside psychiatry, nursing, wellness, and direct care staff. Individual therapy, groups you build yourself, and a team that talks to and supports one another and the people they serve.

Come join our team:

The Farm is showing off a little.

Peppers in every color, tomatoes by the basketful, and figs fresh from the tree. There’s something pretty special about watching what was planted and tended over time become this abundant.

With the right conditions, care, patience, and a little dirt under your fingernails, growth happens. 🌻

Here at The Farm, healing can look a little like this: support nearby, room to move at your own pace, and a whole community showing up around you. Some members of that community just happen to have hooves, paws, or feathers. 🐐🐕🐓

Ines Wullimann, Campus Crew Leader

Ines is the quintessential producer, a teacher of the heart, someone who quietly makes things happen without seeking the spotlight. One of our founding staff members, she joined CooperRiis in 2003 and has done a little of everything since, from leading housekeeping to opening our animal program, home to Skylar the miniature horse, who is still part of the family today.

For the past five years, Ines has led our “Campus Crew,” working with residents to turn ordinary spaces into art. Together they create beauty and hope, giving residents another way to share their healing stories. She leaves every place she touches a little more beautiful than she found it.

We’d like to formally introduce today’s reason nobody got where they were going quite as quickly as planned. 🐴 🌻❤️

Meet Colleen Green, our Assistant Clinical Director. “My goal is to bring respect, compassion, and empathy to my work,” she says, “seeing our residents for the person they are rather than their diagnosis.” Her path here wasn’t a straight line, time at a hospice facility drew her to social work, and from there into work with the Housing Authority and inpatient mental health care. Outside of work, home is her happy place, her husband, two kids, a black cat, and a garden she loves tending. Fall and Halloween are her favorite time of year.

We support everyone finding what works for them. For some, apparently, it’s this. 🐽 🌻

Meet Pat Dockendorf, our Education Coordinator.

“The reward for working at CooperRiis is to see individuals move forward in their lives as they learn to accept and cope with mental health challenges,” she says, and that’s exactly the kind of hope she brings to the job every day. Her career has spanned teaching, social work, and hospital education coordination, with degrees from Ohio State, Columbia, and a Master’s in Mental Health from Johns Hopkins. But honestly, the real headline is this: Pat is a competitive swimmer who wins medals at 99 years old, and still finds time for pickleball, bocce, line dancing, and playing percussion in two community bands. She’s also a proud grandmother to six!

We’ll be at the Lowcountry Mental Health Conference next week, talking healing, referrals, and whatever else comes up when you put a bunch of people who take this stuff as seriously as we do in one room for three days. 🌻

Eric and Jessica will be at the CooperRiis table. Come find us. We’ve got good conversation, and a mild aversion to small talk about the weather 🌧️
