Great partnerships with other industry associations is key to continued success both on and off of Capitol Hill. We loved seeing the Utah Professional Towing Alliance at our office today. We are already looking forward to partnering on legislation at Utah’s Capitol Hill next year.

The DMV is seeing some dealerships email forms on behalf of their customers for cancellation of registration when a vehicle is traded in to the dealership. Although this is a nice courtesy for the customers, the DMV prefers that customers notify the DMV directly via the Motor Vehicle Portal for these cancellations at mvp.tax.utah.gov. If you have questions, please reach out to us at 801-438-2520.

The Federal Trade Commission recently testified before the Senate, reinforcing a major priority: eliminating deceptive fees and ensuring full price transparency for consumers.
From auto sales to online services, regulators are increasing enforcement against hidden charges, “junk fees,” and pricing practices that mislead buyers.

For dealers, the message is clear:
✔️ Advertised prices must reflect the true cost
✔️ Mandatory fees should be included upfront
✔️ Add-ons must be clearly disclosed and truly optional

Recent enforcement actions—including significant penalties tied to deceptive pricing and unwanted add-ons—show that regulators are not slowing down.

💡 What this means for Utah dealers:
Now more than ever, compliance isn’t optional—it’s a competitive advantage. Transparent pricing builds trust, protects your business, and keeps you ahead of regulatory risk.
The Utah Auto Alliance continues to advocate for fair, practical policies while helping dealers stay compliant in a rapidly changing environment.

👉 Stay informed. Stay compliant. Stay competitive.

The Utah Automotive Alliance (UAA) and Independent Dealer Solutions (IDS) is issuing this important industry alert regarding recent enforcement actions and guidance from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) related to vehicle advertising practices and dealer-imposed fees.

In March 2026, the FTC issued warning letters to dozens of dealerships nationwide reinforcing a clear standard: advertised vehicle pricing must include all mandatory fees, with only government-imposed charges (such as taxes, title, and registration) permitted to be excluded.

To ensure compliance and reduce risk, UAA strongly recommends that all dealers IMMEDIATELY:
Review all advertising (website, third-party listings, social media, print, and radio) for pricing accuracy
Ensure all mandatory dealer fees are included in advertised prices
Clearly disclose any conditions tied to pricing (financing, trade-in, rebates)
Eliminate pre-selected or bundled add-ons that are not optional
Train sales and F&I staff on consent requirements for all products
Audit inventory listings to confirm advertised vehicles are available
Work with legal counsel or compliance providers to review advertising practices
