Tomorrow is our first Back to the Future Bike Tour!

We're teaming up with our co-hosts, SweetStreets SLC and Unplugged Wellness Bike Club, to ride through Districts 1 & 2 and see duplexes, triplexes, and fourplexes that have been part of Salt Lake City's neighborhoods for generations. A big thank you to both for helping bring this ride to life.

The Salt Lake City Planning Commission recently voted to send the Expanding Housing Options proposal to the City Council.

What does that mean? The proposal would allow more duplexes and triplexes in Salt Lake City neighborhoods. These homes aren't new to our city. Many already sit on streets across Salt Lake, and they help neighbors of all ages and income levels find a place to call home.

In this video, WALC's Founding Executive Director, Turner C. Bitton, talks about the vote and introduces our Back to the Future Bike Tours. Hop on a bike and ride with us through Salt Lake City's neighborhoods to see homes that have quietly made room for neighbors for generations. Three Saturday morning rides, three parts of the city:

The first Back to the Future Bike Tour rolls out this Saturday! We're excited to announce that WALC is co-hosting all three rides with Sweet Streets and The Unplugged Bike Club.

Duplexes, triplexes, and fourplexes aren't new to Salt Lake City. They've been part of some of our best-loved, most walkable neighborhoods for nearly a century. Ride with us to see these homes up close and talk about how they can help teachers, nurses, young families, and longtime residents stay in the neighborhoods they love.

Don't have a bike? No problem. Thanks to our partners at GREENbike, free rides are available for anyone who wants to join but doesn't have a bike of their own.

Backyard homes are coming to more Utah neighborhoods, and cities are figuring out what that looks like right now.

Utah's SB 284 set a statewide floor for detached accessory dwelling units (DADUs), and named cities must adopt a DADU policy by October 2026. At our next Lunch & Lead, WALC's Turner and Jessica will walk through what the law requires, what's still decided locally, and what's already working in communities across the state.

We first shared this conversation at the APA Utah Fall Conference, and now we're opening it up to everyone. Bring your lunch and your questions.

Last night's vote didn't happen by accident. It happened because neighbors spoke up, shared their stories, sent emails, and showed up again and again. Watching it happen in the room was something special, and we wanted you to see it too.

Every comment, every signature, and every story helped show that Salt Lake City residents want more housing options for every stage of life, from first homes to places to downsize without leaving the neighborhood. Thank you to everyone who made last night possible.

Last night, the Salt Lake City Planning Commission voted unanimously (5-0) to recommend approval of Expanding Housing Options (EHO). This is an important step, and EHO now goes to the City Council for a final decision this fall.

EHO would allow duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes, and starter homes in more of our neighborhoods. That means more room for teachers, nurses, young families, and longtime neighbors to build a life here.

Thank you to every resident who testified, signed on, and showed up, and to the 17 local organizations and businesses standing behind this proposal. You made this possible.

Our work isn't finished yet. We'll keep showing up, sharing the facts, and working alongside our neighbors, brick by brick, until EHO makes it across the finish line.

Who speaks for the Salt Lakers who aren't here yet?

That's the question at the center of a recent Salt Lake Tribune commentary from City Council Chair Alejandro Puy. He points out that the people who show up most at public meetings about housing are, understandably, the people already established in a neighborhood. But there's another group who can't make it to City Hall: the young couple wondering if they'll ever afford a home here, the family that needs more space, the renter hoping to stay in the neighborhood they love, the people who haven't moved here yet.

His takeaway is one worth sitting with: "The homeowner deserves a voice. The renter deserves a voice. And someone needs to speak for the Salt Lakers who aren't here yet."

Did you know duplexes, triplexes, and fourplexes already exist all over Salt Lake City, tucked into some of its most walkable, most loved neighborhoods, some for almost a century?

This October, WALC is hosting Back to the Future Bike Tours, three community bike rides that take you straight to these homes so you can see "missing middle" housing for yourself.

Saturday, October 3, 10 a.m. to noon: Districts 1 and 2, starting at Culture Coffee
Saturday, October 10, 10 a.m. to noon: Districts 3, 4, and 5, starting at Alchemy Coffee
Saturday, October 17, 10 a.m. to noon: Districts 6 and 7, starting at Carol's Pastry Shop

These rides are family friendly, but they run on the longer side, about 5 to 6 miles with up to 16 stops. If you're bringing kids, a child bike seat or a bike trailer can help, or feel free to join us for just the part of the route that fits your family.

The Salt Lake Tribune is covering the debate over Salt Lake City's Expanding Housing Options proposal, and our Founding Executive Director, Turner C. Bitton, is in it.

"This proposal is the product of years of research, coalition-building and organizing, grounded in the simple, evidence-backed idea that the small homes, duplexes, triplexes, and fourplexes already woven into our most beloved neighborhoods can be legal to build again," Bitton said. "It's a vote on whether the next generation of our workforce and young families get to call Salt Lake City home."
