The Longwood Alliance Celebrating Our Community Pride: Illuminating Our Past, Enhancing Our Present, Insuring Our Future, and Thanking Every Hometown Hero

We are the umbrella group for volunteers in Longwood Country! Key projects undertaken by The Longwood Alliance include the expansion and updating of all school facilities through a bond issue passed in 1999, convening of Brookhaven’s first-ever citizens visioning program, the Middle Country Road Renaissance Project (genesis of the Middle Country Road Land Use Plan) and the expansion of the Longwood Veterans Memorial at Bartlett Pond Park.

Please join us for this year’s Gold Star Families Day Recognition Ceremony, to be held on Sunday, September 27, 2026 at 1:00pm at Bartlett Pond Park in Middle Island.

As those of you who have previously attended well know, this is a very poignant event, one of the few held on Long Island. This is traditionally a smaller, briefer ceremony than Memorial Day and Veterans Day, and we gather near the Gold Star monument.

We are grateful to be able to continue this important tradition. We must not forget the sacrifices of our Gold Star families and their loved ones.

We had a great turnout for our final America 250/Summer Concert yesterday at the Middle Island Fire Department HQ. Local historian Rob Robert Von Bernewitz gave a wonderful overview of the Battle of Long Island, including Artist Lake painter Alonzo Chappel's painting, and the Benjamin Tallmadge Trail, which runs right through the heart of Middle Island. Then we enjoyed the music of "Just Sixties," who played two hours of hits from both American and British favorite bands of that great musical decade. Sponsored by The Longwood Alliance via a SC Omnibus Grant from Legislator Chad Lennon. Many thanks to Chad, his staff and our wonderful hosts, the Middle Island Fire Department and District. Thanks, too, to Maria Maria Page Cordaro and her staff from Surge Rehabilitation for the popcorn, cookies and beverages, and the Middle Island Civic Association for the patriotic giveaways. Peace, love and tie dyes ruled!

Seeing many questions and much frustration expressed about the construction underway at the RT25-Coram Mt Sinai Rd intersection. Here's the plan we received in 2024. It shows three separate dedicated lanes on southbound Mt Sinai Coram and northbound out of the shopping center, one each for right turn, thru traffic and left turns, and no merge on eastbound 25 until after you pass the light. This is a NYS DOT project, originally proposed why back in 2016! Please bear in mind that almost all of the current reconfigurations are temporary.

Our second free community concert of the summer was held at MIFD on Saturday, July 11th and featured some wonderful America250 events and the music of The Police/Sting cover band Synchronicity. Attendees heard young Patriot Fynn Grills read aloud the Declaration of Independence, voted for their favorite signer and had the opportunity to sign a copy of the Declaration-- if they dared. And many did! Callyn Gropper hung the historic flags, Fynn led the crowd in the Pledge, Quentin Palifka sang the National Anthem and Gail Lynch-Bailey introduced the band, who played The Police & Sting's greatest hits for two hours nonstop! Maria Cordaro's team from Surge/Quantum provided popcorn and giveaways and Middle Island Civic the red, white and blue momentos and pocket Declaration/Constitutions. The weather was perfect on this evening made possible via the Suffolk County Omnibus Grant Program. Many thanks to our co sponsors SC Legislator Chad Lennon and staff, and our wonderful hosts the Middle Island Fire Department and District. Mark your calendars for our final concert coming up on Saturday, August 22nd.
