This Is Our City People’s Movement Assembly reminded us what becomes possible when Black communities come together with clarity, care, and purpose. From housing justice to collective safety, from neighborhood defense to long-term visioning, so much was shared, sharpened, and set in motion.
This assembly was not the end of anything. It was a beginning. Over the coming weeks, we will be reporting back, sharing next steps, and moving the work forward together. What was built in that space belongs to all of us, and we intend to honor it with action, transparency, and follow-through.
We were also deeply honored to present the Valencia Gunder Power of Us Award. This award is given annually on Valencia Gunder Day to uplift leaders who embody the spirit of collective power, justice, and community-led action. This year, we proudly honored Max Rameau, founder of Take Back the Land, for his unwavering dedication to housing justice, community sovereignty, and the reclamation of space for Black and frontline communities. His work reminds us that liberation is not theoretical. It is built, defended, and sustained by people willing to stand in it for the long haul.
Thank you to everyone who showed up, spoke truth, listened deeply, and committed themselves to what comes next. This is our city. And we are organizing to keep it that way.
