The wealth gap and the cost of living is no secret to anyone living in Miami. We are seeing a rise in homelessness not because people don’t want to work or aren’t working, but because the cost of living here is simply too damn high. Is this the start of Miami having its own skid row?

Heat in Miami hits different and not everyone feels it the same.

Heat in Our City is not equal and here are some reason’s why .

Some of us have central AC, flexible schedules, and shade.

Others are working long hours outside, waiting on buses, or living in spaces where cooling isn’t reliable or affordable.

That’s why heat season (May–August) is more than just hot weather
It’s a real health risk shaped by access, environment, and resources.

This is about care, asking questions and holding the right people accountable.

Check on your people.
Drink water.
Dress comfortably
Protect each other.
Be aware

Because in this heat… we got us. ✊🏾

May Day reminds us that labor rights were not handed to us. They were won through organizing, sacrifice, and collective struggle.

For Black communities, labor has always been tied to the fight for freedom, dignity, housing, safety, care, and the right to live fully.

Today, we honor the workers, organizers, caregivers, and community members whose labor keeps our people and our movements alive.

MIAMI CANDLELIGHT VIGIL FOR NANCY METAYER

With heavy hearts, we gather to honor the life and legacy of our beloved sister, leader, and friend, Nancy Metayer.
While many know Nancy for her historic leadership as Vice Mayor of Coral Springs, we in Miami know her as a fierce community organizer, a champion for climate and environmental justice, and a woman who showed up time and time again for our most vulnerable neighbors in moments of crisis.

Nancy didn’t just serve a city! She served people. She loved Miami deeply, and Miami loved her right back.

Join us as we come together in community, reflection, and love to celebrate her life, her impact, and the light she brought into this world.

Let’s honor Nancy together.

This Is Our City People’s Movement Assembly reminded us what becomes possible when Black communities come together with clarity, care, and purpose. From housing justice to collective safety, from neighborhood defense to long-term visioning, so much was shared, sharpened, and set in motion.

This assembly was not the end of anything. It was a beginning. Over the coming weeks, we will be reporting back, sharing next steps, and moving the work forward together. What was built in that space belongs to all of us, and we intend to honor it with action, transparency, and follow-through.

We were also deeply honored to present the Valencia Gunder Power of Us Award. This award is given annually on Valencia Gunder Day to uplift leaders who embody the spirit of collective power, justice, and community-led action. This year, we proudly honored Max Rameau, founder of Take Back the Land, for his unwavering dedication to housing justice, community sovereignty, and the reclamation of space for Black and frontline communities. His work reminds us that liberation is not theoretical. It is built, defended, and sustained by people willing to stand in it for the long haul.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, spoke truth, listened deeply, and committed themselves to what comes next. This is our city. And we are organizing to keep it that way.

During our outreach this week, we kept hearing: “What’s a People’s Movement Assembly?”
