When the drummers were women, the party got CRANKED🤣.

This video makes me crack the eff up and I’m so glad.

But beyond the hilarity is a deeper truth— women owning their power through the primal drum is unmistakably felt.

So whenever I want to sit back or count myself out, I remind myself that me stepping into my role as a woman who Drums will change the hearts and psyches of everyone in the field.

So I step up.

The eclipse brought up a big chunk of heaviness in my field that I’ve known about, and am being asked to face again.

The irony is that, this time, I’m visiting my childhood bedroom while doing it.

And so here I am, sat in front of my childhood school desk, collaged with photos of baby Katie and her family, drumming my sorrows away.

Because that is what we do, my friends—we drum into the vibration of our sorrows and explain them through our heart and hands.

When I am sad, I want to remain completely still. So I asked myself to move into the rhythm of my sadness instead, bringing new life to deadness within.

And this is the power of the alchemy of the drum.

This is how we move through our sadness.

Otherwise we will be overcome and useless to the meandering river of our hearts.

This is CUBA. 🇨🇺 If the evil of the world ever thought it had a chance against the birth (and growth) place of some of the most influential rhythms & song ever born, it was WRONG.

Because this is what a love letter to Mother Earth looks like through the spirit of drum, dance, & ancient song.

Through their deepest pain and highest alchemy, the people of Cuba have brought us:

RUMBA, SON CUBANO, ORU SECO & CANTADO, MAMBO, PUNTO GUAJIRO, ROOTS OF SALSA, BOLERO, HABANERA, & all the African Folkloric Magic needed to carry its people through times like these.

And if music can do this for the Cuban people, it can surely help you.

Rhythm a code given to us by Mother Earth herself to rise against tyranny and create in high alchemy and miracles. It’s what connects us and builds us into indestructible community so that forces of evil MAY NOT PASS.

It’s time to drum, people.

Cuba broke me — emotionally, spiritually, & physically.

I came to Habana to deepen into spiritual and rhythmic traditions so I could continue to give myself context in this world and pour more deeply into Drum Temple, and while I certainly did that, I was also broken apart.

While we hear about communism, trade blocks, and petroleum shortages on the news, to experience the reality of Cuban life even for just a couple weeks is something entirely different.

On top of this, on day 5 I was hit with the most violent stomach bug I’ve ever had.

I laid in my room, usually without AC and connection, wasting the F**K away, clearing out from both ends for days. I begged.

But it wasn’t just the virus alone that got me. It was the immense sadness I felt looking around and seeing mountains of trash on every street corner because there isn’t enough petroleum for the pickup trucks. And they BURN this trash out in the open.

It was learning that the average salary for a DOCTOR is around $15 a MONTH, and for others less.
