The AWA Neighborhood Trust came into formulation through a thorough examination of the community in which I live. I have worked with children, their families and the harmful effects that they experience for the past 16 or more years. I have also worked with them in different positions; as a teacher, as a tutor, as a case manager, as a HIV/AIDS educator and counselor. In these positions, I have had

the fortunate privilege to exam our areas and see where there is a definite need for more counseling, education and family resources in order to expand our knowledge, as well as self-worth.

1. Increased Anxiety and Test-Related Stress

Many students experience performance anxiety, particularly when test results are tied to promotion, retention, or labeling (“on grade level” vs. “below”).

For minority students, especially African-American and Hispanic children, testing can carry added social pressure due to awareness of historical underperformance data — a phenomenon known as “stereotype threat.”

Studies show that when students fear confirming a negative stereotype about their racial group, their test performance and self-confidence can drop significantly.

This often leads to test fatigue, avoidance of academic challenges, and decreased motivation.
