Microplastics are not only in our oceans, but in our bodies too. πŸ’”

πŸ”¬Emerging research shows that tiny plastic particles can enter the body through the air we breathe and the food and water we consume. Scientists have found that some microplastics are small enough to, travel through the bloodstream and accumulate in organs, including the brain. 🧠🀯

⚠️ Scientists are finding links between microplastics, inflammation, and cell damage, raising important questions about the long-term impacts on human health.

Plastic pollution is not just an environmental issue but a public health issue.

At Debris Free Oceans, we fight for solutions that stop plastic at the source, not just after it reaches our waterways.

Less plastic means healthier people and a healthier planet. πŸ’š

Debris Free Oceans had a paws-itive time tabling at talking all things and connecting with dog lovers from across Miami-Dade πŸ™οΈπŸΆ We shared who we are, collected community survey responses, and had meaningful conversations about why picking up pet waste matters for our waterways. πŸ’©

Here are some standout moments from our Chef Andrew Scholars:

🐾 Rogelio spotted and !

🐾 Bethany met three dog moms who pitched an idea for neighborhood p**p-pickup walks. She also learned that some people still believe dog p**p acts as fertilizer.

🐾 Abby heard from passionate dog owners who shared her frustration about pet waste being left behind in their neighborhoods.

🐾 Alyssa connected with community members who braved the rain to learn more and take our pet waste awareness survey.

Pet waste carries harmful bacteria and excess nutrients. When it rains, this pollution can wash into our waterways, contributing to harmful algal blooms in environments like our beautiful Biscayne Bay.

Huge thanks to everyone who connected with us and showed commitment to keeping our community and waters clean. πŸΎπŸ’™

πŸ‘ We’re so proud of our incredible Program Manager, Amanda Di Perna, for speaking at the Miami-Dade County Legislative Delegation 2026 Public Hearing. This public hearing is where Miami-Dade’s state legislators hear directly from community members and organizations ahead of the legislative session. πŸ—£οΈπŸ›οΈ

Amanda shared what our volunteers see every week: hundreds of pounds of debris pulled from our waterways and neighborhoods, with the overwhelming majority made up of single-use plastic. Cleanups are important, but after more than a decade of hosting them, the amount of plastic we collect has not gone down. We need solutions that stop plastic pollution before it reaches our ocean. πŸŒŠπŸ›‘

Amanda urged local leaders to support SB 240 and HB 575 (Auxiliary Containers), legislation that would protect existing local ordinances, reduce high-pollution items in Florida State Parks, and create a statewide Marine Debris Reduction Plan and a uniform ordinance local governments can adopt. πŸ“‹

Thank you, Amanda, for being a powerful voice for our waters, our community, and a zero-waste future. πŸŒŠπŸ”„
