We partnered with Castus Technologies to test out a new tool that uses predictive intelligence and satellite imagery to detect marine debris and sargassum! 🌊🛰️

⚓️ Thanks to Int. SeaKeepers Society Vessel DISCOVERY program, we spent a day working off the coast of South Florida visiting various coordinates provided by Castus Tech’s predictive intelligence tool and cleaning up marine debris 🛥️

🌊 This technology has the potential to help identify massive accumulations of sargassum and marine debris before it ever reaches our shores

♻️ The National Zero Waste Conference is a two-day educational and networking event that provides an opportunity to hear from national experts sharing case studies, program implementation, and Zero Waste systems that work.

🗓️ On Oct 22, Maddie Kaufman will present on collaborative approaches to developing a community-driven zero waste strategy, from early visioning to actionable implementation in creating the Zero Waste Miami Coalition. She will then be on a Grassroots Community Action panel alongside the Minnesota Environmental Justice Table and I Pick Up Worcester Litter Very Well

We’re so excited to introduce our 2026-27 ResilientSea intern, Jazmine!

Jazmine is a senior at the University of Miami and a part-time gymnastics coach 🤸

She is studying medical anthropology and public health, and aims to compete a Master’s degree in Urban Planning and work to better South Florida communities 🌴

Her professional interests are extreme heat🌡️, climate gentrification🏗️, and coastal risk/resilience 🌊

She also enjoys figure skating, coding, and spending time in the ocean! ❄️💻🐙

This Miami ResilientSea project internship with Debris Free Oceans focuses on the often-overlooked connection between inland communities and coastal resilience.

Hailey is an undergraduate student at the University of Miami, studying Marine Science and Biology with a minor in Marine Policy 🎓🪸📜

She loves going to a home football game 🏈 and spending time exploring the ocean 🌊

Hailey is passionate about environmental conservation, and began her journey by educating her local community about the effects of aquatic invasive species.

💪 Two years of collaboration, learning, and zero waste action, now available for communities to use and build upon!

We are so excited to share two new resources developed through our 2-year Zero Waste Miami project, created in collaboration with the incredible organizations and individuals who make up the Zero Waste Miami coalition:

Developed by coalition members through a collaborative strategic planning workshop series, the Strategy includes detailed implementation plans for priority zero waste projects (including budgets, timelines, partner roles, implementation steps, and more) alongside best practices and key considerations to help guide zero waste efforts across Miami-Dade County.

Have ideas for potential partners, funders, or ways to strengthen or advance these projects? We’d love to hear from you!
