๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ’ง Desert to Dish: Hydroponics๐Ÿ’ง๐ŸŒฑ

Today our Nature Friends explored how plants can grow without soil through the science of hydroponics!

Ms. Hibah introduced the kids to hydroponics and explained how โ˜€๏ธ sunlight, ๐Ÿ’ง water, ๐Ÿงช nutrients, ๐Ÿƒ leaves, and ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ air all work together to help plants grow.

Then Ms. Felicia helped each child set up their very own hydroponic growing system complete with seeds to take home, care for, and use to grow food! ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿฅฌ

Through Desert to Dish, kids are learning where food comes from while discovering different ways we can grow it! Paso del Norte Health Foundation

At Nature Friends, eating outdoors is more than having a picnic. Through our Desert to Dish project, we've discovered where food comes from by harvesting vegetables on local farms, picking fresh fruit in orchards, gathering pecans, exploring microgreens, growing potatoes at home, cooking over campfires, making tortillas from scratch, baking cornbread, and even creating prickly pear lemonade.

Sharing a meal outside helps children connect the food on their plates to the land that provides it. Every outdoor meal becomes an opportunity to learn about agriculture, native plants, nutrition, gratitude, and stewardship of the Chihuahuan Desert.

๐ŸŽ From Desert to Dish: Apple Picking ๐ŸŽ

Nature Friends had the sweetest adventure at Nichols Ranch And Orchards ! Our kids got to experience picking fresh apples straight from the trees and connecting with where our food comes from. ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿ

After picking, we turned apples into art by creating apple-stamped tea towels, then wrapped up the morning with an apple toppings bar filled with delicious ways to dress up our freshly picked fruit!

๐Ÿฆ Migration Monitors: Survival Game!

Today our Migration Monitors played a hands-on survival board game to experience the challenges birds face during migration!

Kids had to navigate obstacles while finding the food, water, shelter, and safe resting places birds need along their journey. They learned how predators, weather, habitat loss, and limited resources can determine whether a migrating bird survives.

A fun way to discover just how challenging migration really is! ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿฆ๐ŸŒฟ

๐Ÿ•๏ธ๐ŸŒฒNature Friends stayed busy learning while camping in Cloudcroft - making mini fire-starting kits, pitching tents and hitting the trail for a hike.

One of the highlights was working together to make Friendship Soup over the campfire! ๐Ÿฅ•๐Ÿฅ”๐Ÿฅฃ Each Nature Friend brought an ingredient to contribute to our vegetable soup. The kids did the work themselves, peeling, chopping, mixing, and pouring ingredients into the pot before watching it all come together over the campfire. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Camping gave us the perfect opportunity to practice outdoor skills, build independence, work as a team, and experience the joy of preparing and sharing a meal together in nature!

Thank you Paso del Norte Health Foundation for supporting our outdoor learning ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ
