Nature Friends is on its first ever overnight camping trip in Cloudcroft, New Mexico πŸ•

From braving the rain to building outdoor skills, our youth have embraced every part of the adventure. Campers observed pocket gophers in their natural habitat, explored the beauty of the Lincoln National Forest on a scenic hike, learned how to safely use flint strikers to start a fire, pitched their own tents, and gathered around the campfire to roast marshmallows.

Along the way, families also learned important wilderness safety skills, including how to stay safe in bear country and be responsible outdoor stewards.

This first full week of June is National Garden Week, June 7th-13th. This photo is produce from a Nature Friend's garden that they sold at the Friday evening market last season. It's not too late to plant your own! You can visit our seed library in Las Cruces at Parque de Alegre on Joe Gutierrez St.

What an incredible turnout for our Snake Awareness event this morning! 🐍
We were thrilled to welcome so many families eager to learn about these fascinating reptiles.

Participants explored different snake species, learned important safety tips about what to do in the event of a rattlesnake bite, and discovered what it takes to responsibly care for snakes as pets. Kids and adults alike got creative with snake-themed painting and bracelet making, showed off their snake face paint, and entered to win a raffle basket filled with snake-inspired goodies.

Most importantly, the event brought our community together to replace fear with understanding and appreciation for these often misunderstood animals. Thank you to everyone who attended, asked questions, created art, and helped make the day such a success. Huge shout out to for joining us today and to for sponsoring this community event!

πŸŒΏπŸš’ Community Beautification in Action! πŸš’πŸŒΏ

Nature Friends was proud to team up with White Sands Construction, Inc. to help beautify Las Cruces' newest fire station, Fire Station 9.

Our youth planted several shrubs to help create a welcoming landscape for firefighters and community members alike. This project gave youth the opportunity to learn about planting, teamwork, and the importance of taking pride in community spaces.

The construction crew was so impressed by the hard work, positive attitudes, and dedication our youth demonstrated throughout the project. In fact, they jokingly said that they would be happy to hire our kids for future jobs!

Thank you to White Sands Construction for including Nature Friends in this meaningful project and for helping inspire the next generation of community leaders and environmental stewards! πŸŒ±πŸ’š

πŸͺΊπŸŒΏ Today our Migration Monitors took on an exciting engineering challenge inspired by nature!

Using only natural materials, kids worked together to design and build bird nests. But there was a catch: their nests had to be strong enough to stay together when placed in a tree and exposed to "wind."

Through this hands-on STEM activity, our young naturalists practiced problem-solving, teamwork, observation, and engineering skills while learning about the incredible adaptations of migratory birds.

Some nests held strong, some needed redesigning, and all of them taught us something new about the challenges birds face when creating a safe home in the wild! 🐦

Nature Friends continued our Desert to Dish program with a fun hands-on exploration of cactus plants with Ms. Felicia! Our littles created their own prickly pear cactus models out of cardboard, paint and pom poms. We also enjoyed reading Why Oh Why Are Deserts So Dry? together and talking about life in the desert.

To wrap up the lesson, the littles tasted prickly pear cactus jelly on corn crackers and discovered how desert plants can also become delicious foods. Today was a day of creativity, literacy, sensory learning, and connecting with the unique edible plants of the Southwest!

Thank you to for sponsoring this program.

Today is Eat More Fruit and Vegetables Day! Nature Friends get the opportunity to pick fresh food from local farms and grow their own food at home! Our program has provided strawberry plants, seeds to start a garden, and members are currently having a corn growing contest. We also get to eat and harvest from local farms; we've eaten watermelon, tomatoes, chard, asparagus, and from our recent farm visit, alfalfa! πŸ˜‹

Nature Friends headed back to today for another hands-on learning experience with ALFALFA 🌱

We met with Ms. Sarena of to learn how to turn one of the healthiest plants on Earth into nourishing teas and tinctures using simple kitchen tools and everyday ingredients. Families explored the benefits of herbal preparations while learning traditional skills rooted in wellness, sustainability, and plant knowledge.

Alfalfa is packed with vitamins and minerals including vitamins A, C, E, and K, along with calcium, iron, magnesium, and potassium. It has been used for generations to support overall wellness, digestion, and energy while providing a nutrient-rich addition to teas and herbal remedies.

At Nature Frienda we are inspiring youth to connect deeper with plants grown right here in Southern NM.

Thank you to for sponsoring this workshop, the transportation to get there and for supporting healthy kids!
