This week our members met Ms. Araceli Solis, the recently appointed Executive Director of Childrens Reading Alliance. She spoke about the Alliance’s dynamic program to engage parents and empower them to be their child’s “First Teacher.”

This galvanizing program enables families to greatly benefit from instituting a love and appreciation of reading within the family setting. This sets the stage for better educational achievement for their children going forward. A very worthy development in Doña Ana County.

We also welcomed new member Raha Mobarak, DPM to our club. Here, being inducted by Vice President Richelle Peugh- Swafford.

In our most recent meeting, members and guests were pleased to welcome Drs. Katherine Nixon and Brittany Fisher as speakers. Dr. Nixon is the Program Director and Dr Fisher is the Assistant Program Director of the Mountainview Medical Group - Osteopathic Medicine.

The Doctors reviewed how Osteopathic medicine is used to address a wide range of ailments including pinched nerves, and skeletal-muscular pain that results in reduced mobility and the quality of daily living.

Their program at Montainview serves a range of patients from Las Cruces, as well as from a much wider geographic area. Presently, there is a three month waiting period for an appointment, reflecting its wdespread popularity. Treatments are provided by both Doctors, as well as by five DO residents. The program contemplates having a total of six residents and they are looking for a sixth.

Another goal of the Mountainview program is to support the growth of DO practitioners in Las Cruces to better address the community’s medical needs.

From left to right are club member David Yaryan, Dr. Fisher, Dr. Nixon and Club Member John Alberts who introduced our speakers.

We were delighted this week to welcome Chef G. Thomas Drake as our speaker.

Chef Drake is the Director of the Culinary program at Dona Ana Community College. In the last ten years under his direction the program has grown from eight students to 170 today.

While he and other chefs teach culinary arts, it is within the context of how foods represent multiple cultures, help students to gain marketable skills all while reinforcing cultural identities.

He spoke about how food plays a critical role as a tool for leadership, student group work and community connections.

The culinary program at DACC fully embraces and explores the college's identity as a Community institution.

Overall, these activities are focused on building leadership skills, oriented on career pathways, excellent attendance, graduation rates and students becoming scholarship eligible.

As one of only two school districts in the state with such focus, Las Cruces students greatly and our community profit from this organizational development in our schools.
