While attending this year’s Induction Ceremony in Cooperstown, Hall of Famer Jim Kaat recalled one of the rare occasions he faced Willie Mays — during the 1966 All-Star Game — and reflected on the lasting influence Willie had on the game and generations of players then, and who followed.

Did you know that Willie almost played Winter Ball in Cuba? He signed with the Almendares Alacranes after the 1950 season, but he injured his ankle and never made an appearance with the team.

Had he played, he would have been teammates with fellow prospect Tommy Lasorda, who was a farm hand in the rival Dodgers’ organization at the time.

Did you know that Willie Mays had his own version of a “flu game”?

A rib dinner didn’t sit well with Mays one night, and he was ill up until gametime; manager Alvin Dark didn’t even have him in the lineup until just before the game.

Desperate for Mays’ bat in the lineup on April 30, 1961, teammate Joey Amalfitano asked Mays how he felt on a scale of 1 to 100. Mays claimed he was a “70”, and Amalfitano said, "Well, your 70 is going to be better than whoever goes out there for their 100" and offered up his own lighter bat as a way to combat Mays' weakness. Willie went deep four times with that bat! (Source: The Athletic)

Did you know why Willie was called the “Say Hey Kid?”

It was for a reason we can all relate to! As a young player, Willie was meeting so many new people — players, executives, and fans alike — that he could hardly remember everyone’s name.

His solution: greet everyone by shouting ”say hey”! Thus, the legendary nickname was born.

On July 11, the Giants selected Peyton Bonds, the nephew of the legendary Barry Bonds, in the third round of the 2026 MLB Draft.

Speaking of Giants family ties, did you know that Willie is the godfather of Barry Bonds?

Barry spent a lot of time as a youngster in the Giants' clubhouse with father, Bobby, who was Willie’s teammate. The two formed a close relationship and when Bobby’s wife, Pat, asked Willie to be her son's godfather, he enthusiastically accepted.

Barry and Willie shared a close relationship until Willie passed in 2024.
